Three long-time friends, John, Meech and Hoxie, have decided to take a trip for some trout fishing in Maine’s remote Moosehead wilderness. John is hoping that the trip will be conciliatory after learning of the resentment Meech has for Hoxie over Meech’s breakup with his wife, since it was John who was secretly in love with Meech’s wife for years. The animosity between them ignites when Meech, high on his own ego, kills a huge bull moose that was the embodiment of the wilderness spirit for John and Hoxie. A confrontation between the three of them and a game warden results in murder. John, Meech and Hoxie create an unhallowed unity of secrecy and return to New Jersey while the town of Greenville mourns the death of the game warden, until John decides to return to Maine. They say that the criminal always returns to the scene of the crime. What will John discover?

Review I downloaded this book because the description got my attention. I've always liked mystery/suspense novels with a lot of drama and character insight involved, and I must say that "Winter Soon" did not disappoint me. This is the story of a man who is forced by the circumstances to do something he would have never agreed to otherwise: to cover the accidental murder of an innocent man. I liked John Mason the moment I met him. From his group of friends, he seemed to be the most rational, but also the most troubled one. It's easy to root for him because he is so realistic and believable. Actually, the author did a great job at developing all of his characters. John cannot live with the guilt, so he decides to go back to the town where the accident happened and see how the investigation is going. As expected, no one suspects him or his friends, but this means than another innocent man is about to suffer, and John cannot let that happen. This is why I liked the main character so much: he did something wrong and now he is trying to make things right and, maybe, even obtain forgiveness. There were times when I didn't agree with his actions, but there were also times when I had to admit that he didn't have a better option. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys character-driven stories that also raise interesting questions regarding morality, forgiveness, and what doing the right thing really means. I have downloaded this book and was fascinated by the intriguing story! It is well-written, had me hooked from the first chapter on and the author portrayed some really credible, interesting characters. It was filled with a lot of emotion and really had me wanting to know how the story concludes. Great characters that depict the real and normal world that we do live. The novel is full of anger, secrecy and complete intertwined love triangle. It covers the widespread aspects of life, hate, malice and revenge as portrayed by the character. 'Winter Soon' is a great masterpiece from David who displays greater understanding of real life through deeper reflection of who we really are from our inner soul. Great work Martin, hope to read several of your series in the near future.

By jeancfisher I got this book on my Kindle and, let me tell ya, when I started reading it, I got so caught up in the story-line that I couldn't put it DOWN!The story starts out so seemingly innocently with 3 good buddies going a hunting/fishing trip together -- a "guy thing", having a good time and, within the turn of a couple of pages, the whole thing goes horribly wrong... All of a sudden, what was a carefree vacation turns into a frantic scramble to cover a horrible crime. The author knows how to weave all of the "little details" into the mounting apprehension and suspense that will turn out to be the major reasons why it all goes south and the glaring errors that nearly get all 3 caught. And the thing is (given the backgrounds of the main characters), I could totally see this situation actually happening. The horrible things that happen to us in life happen just like that. We're skating along, feeling great, everything's hunky-dorey and, in one New York minute, everything turns inside out and goes to pot. Then there are the sudden twists that stand what you thought you knew about the characters involved on its head as you realize there's a whole other sub-story you weren't aware of going on, as well. And these twists are so well timed -- far enough apart to lull you into complacency and then, WHAM! something else is revealed and you have to go back and re-read the last page or two to make sure you read what you thought you read...A nearly flawless execution of the art of mystery writing! Bravo!
