“Beautifully crafted moments from a faraway place, equal parts travelogue and love sonnet.” Tom Dooley, Editor of Eclectica Magazine In TALES OF CHORONI, the former advertising creative director has left his fast-paced career in New York for a remote colonial village on the coast of Venezuela, set below a mountainous cloud forest and isolated from the press of modern life. In this tropic paradise, he shares adventures with characters like La Ballena (The Whale), a huge mechanic who can fix your car for next to nothing if he can just fit under it; El Zorro (The Fox), an old fisherman who serves up world-class cuisine in a humble surfside shack; the Shaman of El Mamón, who cures gallstones and shingles with common herbs and special incantations; and a man named Blanco, who can teach you new ways to scam friends and strangers alike. Travel with him to settlements you can only reach by sea and hike up mountain trails where people live as they did centuries ago, without electricity or running water, with only burros and mules for transportation. Motor by launch up the mighty Orinoco to the remote Yanomami village of Platanal to rescue an Indian shot in the chest with a poisoned arrow, and ride a horse across the Andes to the hidden village of Los Nevados. Little adventures in the middle of nowhere.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. fantastic writing about a charming place By susan_d Humor, beauty, melancholy, this collection has it all. This book seems like an effortless love letter to a place I couldn't have imagined, but that now seems almost familiar, even though I've never been there. Hamilton weaves tales that are far ranging in emotion and brings to vivid focus this exotic place that by the end feels almost like home. There are fish out of water stories, crazy adventures, and romantic pastiches. Truly a wonderful way to warm up the cold winter.

The man is a natural born teacher of the craft who understands the rules well enough to show you how to break them gracefully an By The Legendary Bill is the kind of wordsmith who has not only written cutlines and captions that sell products by communicating complex ideas - in just enough words to get the job done at a glance - but supervised the rest of the creative staff at a Mad Ave agency. You get a description of Coca-Cola red that tells you how and why the paint is applied, where, and makes you see it, and that's just a paragraph in a spare and engaging entry that moves you across mountain ranges, beside raging rivers, and through sleepy villages once ruled by hot-blooded tyrants and revolutionary filibusters. You emerge from the green hell of a tropical afternoon, only to gaze deeply into the vacant eyes of a very drunken and possibly brain-damaged gardener clinging to a bottle of aguardiente, the Caribbean word for firewater, who affirms and asserts with conviction that for him it is a truly venomous enemy just waiting to take his life away by uttering the name of a thoroughly undesirable and completely deadly snake that feeds on its prey in the underbrush. It's the work of a craftsman who knows how to tickle with the tip of his pen. Forget about it. He also taught English composition at a prep academy for lock-jaws. Read this book to sharpen your skills of description. The man is a natural born teacher of the craft who understands the rules well enough to show you how to break them gracefully and with the greatest effect. Put him on an ice floe and cast him adrift, and you will get a travelogue chock full of breathtaking word pictures as sharp as any you've seen in "National Geographic." - The Legendary

To Love Travel Is To Love The World By Susan Tepper An intrepid traveler, myself, who has been sidelined this year for various reasons, I grabbed onto Tales of Choroni the way a shipwrecked person clutches a life raft. This is a travel memoir, a love story, and possibly, at times, a fable. Regardless of how you decide to classify the book, these are intimate and lush stories binding the landscapes with quirky characters, humor and compassion. To love travel is to love the world. Here you will encounter Lloyd Luckett who prefers to be called 'Paco' and whose grandfather was a Texas ranger who rode with Pancho Villa. There's the enchanting Marisol who consults a shaman to cure her ailment. A saint who appears in a primitive graveyard, and many other captivating characters and moments. You will want to go to Choroni after visiting it in this enchanting book by William Reese Hamilton. Most highly recommended.
