Guide to walking the West Highland Way National Trail from Milngavie, Glasgow to Fort William. This popular 95-mile long-distance route takes under a week. It starts by passing through the lush lowlands north of Milngavie into the rugged landscapes of Loch Lomond, Glen Falloch and Strath Fillan before heading for Rannoch Moor and Black Mount. Touching briefly on Glencoe, it climbs finally to the hidden glen of Lairig Mor before finishing in Fort William. Step-by-step route description is illustrated with extracts from OS mapping and colour photos and includes information about the Way's ancient history and geology along the way. Lots of useful tips on preparing for a trekking trip, what to take and how to plan your itinerary (with suggestions for 6, 7 and 8-day schedules). This guidebook also contains a route description of the Way from Fort William to Glasgow (north to south).

The Only Trail Book and Map You Will Need By JB My wife and I just finished walking the West Highland Way, using the 2011 (3rd) edition of the Cicerone guide book by Terry Marsh. The prose is a little florid, with some extraneous observations/information. Also, less accommodation info is included than earlier versions (the stated reason being that the internet can supply that need, which I disagree with ... would have liked to have some such info in the guidebook appendix, as in the past). That said, this book, with its ordinance survey map, is very adequate, and is the only book/map you will need to do the WHW, especially since the trail itself is well marked. It is compact and relatively weatherproof. Note that the daily stopping points in the book are recommendations; we found others workable, especially since for some reason the Kings House area has such an inadequate number of rooms. Great photographs. By the way, the WTW is a scenic and worthwhile walk, but can be difficult in parts due to rocky trails and uphills.

Talbot We just completed walking the Way and were extremely disappointed in this guide. Despite this being the 3rd edition I was shocked at the egregious errors, poor maps, and lack of useful information. If your goal is to actually walk the West Highland Way this is not the book for you. Please do not waste your money and end up in the same situation we did. Instead, go with an alternative.
