About the Author John Funke is a retired journeyman toolmaker, having spent most of his life servicing the needs of American industry. At the same time, his voracious interest in history and other studies of the human condition brought about his being given the sobriquet "the factory floor philosopher" by those who worked with him. By Jay Mittener I absolutely loved this book from page one until the ending where I wished for more. I read this back to back with another of Funke's novels and am astonished at the versatility that is displayed in his writing style. This book follows brothers Jerry & Benny Banks through adversity and shows us how even siblings who spend all of their time bickering and arguing have an underlying love and loyalty that shines when it needs to.I loved to follow the journey and realize with each page that siblings, especially brothers or sisters, have a bond that is unbreakable. We are seeing so much in the news about bullying because it's a hot button issue, but this shows us what bullying looks like when it's something more than a political agenda speaking point. In the world of rights and wrongs and revenge, Ordeal at the Old Ivy Oak slams a home run. You won't be sorry you've read this- even if you are an adult!

Jerry, the elder of the two brothers, is a popular jock. Benny is a socially lacking, bright kid. Trouble begins on the way to the campsite when the boys begin to have normal sibling issues and it seems like things might end up being a sour trip because of the arguing. However, when they decide to stop and help two men requesting to be taken to the hospital, it all goes downhill from there. The book is a bit difficult to read; sometimes when I read the conversations, I think 'what teenager would talk like that?' The content is not bad though, I can see past that and get the story that the author is telling me and that counts.

By Rose Lynn This is a really well done story about coming to terms with bullying, family ties, sibling rivalry and many other underlying items. It is one of those books you'll have a hard time putting down in fact. I found myself throughly engrossed in it from the point of opening it to the very last page. The only issue I found with this book is that sometimes the author was rather wordy, where he could have said, with much detail something in a single sentance, it turned instead into a paragraph. It also had some unneeded facts thrown into the story line (I learned an awful lot about poison ivy that I never knew previously.) If you can work past that though it really is a great story with great morals behind it.
