Few would argue that Israel holds a particular fascination for men and women of faith. But most aren’t going to walk there and put their life on the line in the process. Inspired by the pilgrimage of Dutchwoman Johanna van Fessem, in the winter of 2006 Anthony de Lyon decided to do just that. So began a 251-day odyssey spanning fifteen countries and two continents. Trekking across Europe and the Middle East, Tony battled against dogs, clouds of flies and a deadly snake but was helped on his way by white-robed monks, a Bohemian nobleman, a speed-crazy Croatian farmer, practically the entire population of Turkey and the Russian mafia (who kindly made him a pork sandwich). Sleeping rough in meadows and open desert, exploring Ottoman mosques and Crusader castles, robbed by conmen and stalked by terrorists, engulfed in storms, blizzards and suffocating heat, Tony struggled on, aided by gallons of cola, about 2,000 plasters, hundreds of Good Samaritans, an innate sense of the ridiculous and above all, an implacable will to seek out the Divine.

About the Author Following travels in Turkey, Anthony de Lyon knows well the thrill that being chased by a man on a donkey can bring. But his life wasn’t always that exciting. Once a sober, blue-tied civil servant, he’s since reinvented himself as an IT consultant, a charity fundraiser, a travel novelist and latterly as a typesetter dabbling in unusual end-of-line hyphenations. Somewhere on this journey he “found God” and decided to walk to Jerusalem. When not obliterating walking boots on big treks, he now appraises author manuscripts and runs a website for long-distance walkers, trekkers and pilgrims. I wanted to like it so bad, but cannot go on any further. Anthony De Lyon`s style of writing is just exhausting. He carries on about things that are irrelevant.

His second try is more realistic but there are still many surprises to come. His determination to walk across the fragmented Yugoslavia has him constantly on edge, but friendly people are in the most unexpected places and except for one instance where he is chased at night, he manages quite well. That he would travel through Jordan to reach Israel is truly a nasterpiece of bluffing his way. Well written and thoroughly enjoyable.

Absolute novice dares to think he can walk from the Netherlands to Israel....and he doesn't take the easiest route either. Beautiful combination of suspense, description, humour, insight, desperation, observation, travelogue....
