One of the first towns settled in the lands once known as Connecticut’s Western Reserve, Mentor continues to thrive more than two centuries later. After starting out in 1797 as a sparsely populated wilderness outpost with only a handful of permanent residents, Mentor has transformed into a vibrant 21st-century city. The earliest settlers began the great task of felling trees, clearing land, and establishing farms to provide themselves with food and shelter during the area’s harsh winters. Through the 19th century, Mentor’s growth was slow but steady. Its citizens not only included hardworking farmers and artisans, but wealthy turn-of-the-20th-century Cleveland business leaders, a Civil War Medal of Honor recipient, and the 20th president of the United States, James A. Garfield. Once known for extensive farmland, grand country estates, interurban railroads, and some of the finest nurseries in the country, Mentor is now a diverse community with more than 50,000 residents and a strong and burgeoning local economy.

Being a long time Mentor resident this book brought back memories. It also taught me things that I didn't know, like the 1905 crash of the 20th Century Limited train. I was reminded that Eleanor B. Garfield was Mentor's Mayor in the 50s. The section on Paisley Farms reminded me of grade school when a Paisley girl was in my class. And the photo on page 115 of the volunteer sheriff patrol in the Headlands made me look twice to see if I could recognize a childhood friend whose father was one of those volunteers. There were of course things that didn't make it into the book that I would have liked to see but there is only so much room and someone has to decide what gets in and what doesn't. Anyone interested in Mentor should read this book. Well done, Mr. Matowitz.

Another Home Run by Tom Matowitz By Amazon Customer Tom Matowitz's growing reputation as an inspired writer and researcher is on full display throughout this newest work in his "Images of America" series, "Mentor." Chock-a-block with rarely-if-ever publicly published photos of a long-disappeared middle America, Mr. Matowitz's "Mentor" invites the reader into the world of a struggling, growing, log-cabin, small-town, mid-west America from the late 1700s until the late 1900s. Anyone contemplating writing their own family history will not go wrong by picking up this fine example of "how to do history."Thomas R. Jones

A History of Mentor By Amazon Customer “Mentor” chronicles the history of this Northeast Ohio city through photos as well as a detailed – yet easy to follow - backstory. Mr. Matowitz took great care and devoted a significant amount of time locating material which had not been previously published in order to deliver a fresh perspective on the history of this city.If you are a history buff or have roots in or around Mentor, this book is a must-have addition to your collection.Ante Logarusic
