21 of 21 people found the following review helpful. surprisingly modern, and full of interesting details By Daniel Mackler i picked this book up from a homeless bookseller in manhattan for a dollar, figuring it might be worth a try. and it was - i read the whole thing!it's major pluses: it's written in a surprisingly modern style. i've read other travelogues of the time period, like melville's omoo and typee and others, and this one was FAR better. perhaps it's that the author is not pompous or trying too hard to be "literary." he tries a little bit, but mostly he just sticks to the facts and tells the story. and the story on its own is interesting enough - travelling all around eastern siberia with wandering natives on dogsleds and reindeer sleds, living in yurts and eating funky foods, starving at times, camping under snowdrifts at fifty below zero, and mostly just observing and interacting with native peoples who (i have a strange feelings) may not even exist any more. and all this set in the backdrop of such an interesting time period in our history - just after the U.S. Civil War.other point of food for thought: the guy did his travels at AGE TWENTY!!!, and wrote and published the entire book by age 25! this strikes me as quite odd, because his whole style is...so mature...and intellectual. you'd think you're reading a book by a forty year old (at least). and to this that seven years before he travelled to siberia...he was just thirteen.anyway, all in all a good and interesting book, good in a way for light historical reading, but nothing to shock your boots off...

Kennan's style is honest, unadorned and surprisingly contemporary for a book written 140 years ago. Kennan also displays a wonderful sense of humor. In the current age where so many adventure writers are professional adventurer seekers, it is refreshing to read a book by an author who found genuine, uncontrived adventure in the course of doing a difficult job in a place unknown to Westerners. As an avid reader of adventure and travel writing, Tent Life in Siberia ranks as one of the better reads and biggest surprises I've encountered.

There were several versions of the book on offer, and at first I chose the wrong one. Be sure you get the Illustrated version! I didn't know there were any illustrations until I got to the end, and there were the captions for pictures, but no pix! I actually bought the book again to get the one with photos. The author, George Kennan, explores Siberia while it was still tribal. He witnessed the famous Aurora Borealis of 1867 and describes it in stunning detail. The best part about the book is that it is hilarious. Kennan had a sense of humor that never quits.

As ‘Old Earth’ (as it came to be called) was in the process of freezing over, the wealthier nations decided to launch a massive multi-generational colonization fleet to colonize the habitable planet of a distant solar system. While there were millions of people living and working on the Moon, Mars, Jupiter’s and Saturn’s moons and in the asteroid belt, it was considered by all to be time for a ‘let’s not put all of our eggs into one basket’ play. After thousands of years in transit the first of the colony ships were finally beginning to arrive in the system of the Yellow Sun. The lead vessels discovered another two planets on the outer and inner edges of the habitable range of the new solar system. In addition a Blue Sun system was identified, blocked from Earth’s view by the Yellow Sun. It also contained a habitable planet, and also a habitable ocean moon around that system’s gas giant. A minority of the colony ships were far enough off of their intended trajectory that instead of trying to force their ships into the Yellow Sun system they made for the Blue Sun system instead. Once established, the people of the two systems maintained long-range radio contact to trade technology and technological advances, but they did not communicate on any kind of a social level. With a one-way radio transmission time of over 40 days the distances were considered to be too great for chit-chat. Life in the Blue Sun system had been harsh and difficult at first, with a very high death rate. Nobody had really noticed the intensive cultural and physical evolution that had taken place in the centuries spent trying to survive in that harsh environment. 700 years after the last of the colony ships had arrived in the system of the Blue Sun, the residents there noticed a faint new star in the talons of the Eagle constellation. What happened next would transform the people and cultures of both systems forever… This story will consist of four books when complete and will span the most exciting 125 years in the history of two very different solar systems. The planned release of the second book in the series is August, 2016. The names of the books will be as follows: Book One – The Big Push; Book Two – A Day at The Races; Book Three – Flight of the Four Horsemen; Book Four – Coronation of the Queen.

For the past 4 years we have been saving up for a 2 week vacation and an experience we hope to treasure for the rest of our lives. I want to go to Maui and experience warm weather, relaxation and Hawaiian Tropics and I almost had her convinced until she came home with ITALY, THRU MY LENS. Now I've got a problem. "We have to go to Italy" she demanded.We went to bed that night, and leafed through the book. I can't tell you how many time she said, " we have to see this", "we have to go." With every passing page her enthusiasm worked on me. We went back and forth before we fell asleep and woke up the next morning, looked at each other, and said, almost simultaneously "We're going to Italy."We spent the next several days planning our trip based on the photos in the book. We want to see what the author saw and why he choose that scene to photograph. We leave May 1st and we're very excited. Italy, thru the lens will be our travel guide.

This book tells you where to eat, drink,shop( outlets included), get marriedand most of all enjoy some of Michael's favorite places. Many which you would not find without the help of his book.If you have a passport or not, buy it to enjoy the read and the pictures.
