TRAVEL: THE GUIDE an insightful, irreverent, and highly visual new take on travel that will challenge readers to rethink the way they look at travel and how they interact with the world around them. You might think of it like an inspiring TED Talk on travel that you flip through yourself. Jason Cochran, author and editor for Frommer's guides, described it this way: "It's not really just about travel. It's about exploding every stereotype, fear, and expectation you have about the rest of the world and your place in it. Once you start flipping through, you'll be consuming little knowledge bombs like potato chips. Good luck stopping. And good luck seeing things the same way ever again." Mike Carter, a contributor to The Observer and The Guardian wrote: "Turns on its head just about everything we thought we knew about how to get the best out of our travels, gloriously debunking the myths and exposing the clichés along the way."

It's what The Daily Show would do if it covered tourism." - Larry Bleiberg, travel writer "Lansky's book has all the qualities of a successful trip: It's eye-opening, unexpected, gorgeous, and pleasurable. Also free from gastrointestinal difficulties." - AJ Jacobs, author of The Know-It-All and The Year of Living Biblically"Doug tries to work out what travel is really all about. Who knows, his ideas may just be right."- Tony Wheeler, founder, Lonely Planet

From the Author I started playing with the rough idea for this book 10 years ago. I continued piecing it together it, on and off, a little each year when I was inspired to do so. A year back, I dedicated myself to finishing it and now that it's done, I couldn't be more happy with the result. In the last decade, I've penned some guide books, gift books, and funny sign books.  It's nice to have publishers request material (and pay for it) and keep you busy, but I can't say I was passionate about any of it.  This is the book I am passionate about. I received help and advice along the way, and am especially thankful two previous editors-in-chief of COLORS Magazine gave me some of their time. I contributed to COLORS many years ago and was inspired by that powerfully visual format -- perhaps the closest thing to the style in this book.  So, if you're familiar with COLORS and liked it, I think it's safe to say you'll enjoy this book as well.    I've long tried to persuade travel editors that it's possible to make travel writing interesting without using the classic formulas that get so many clicks ("3 perfect days in Rome", "Top 10 cheap hotels in New York", "How I rediscovered myself on a weeklong trip to a Caribbean Spa", "How to book a cheap flight/hotel", "following in the footsteps of this historical person you've never heard of," etc.)  There's this odd unspoken aspect of travel writing that it's supposed to try to convince the reader to go someplace. Sell, sell, sell. I must admit, I never quite understood the entertainment value of that.  I read Lonely Planet's 2004 coffee table book called The Travel Book, which went on to become an international bestseller.  Like many, I wanted to see what the fuss was about, so I picked up a copy.  As I flipped through it, I was impressed by the photography but I couldn't help thinking that it felt like a $25 collection of brochures. I know it was supposed to be inspirational and help with some trip ideas and so forth, but it just felt like a missed opportunity to say something deeper than "Here are some pretty countries you can travel to." I suppose it did inspire me, but not to travel. I wanted to create a book that packed a visual punch, but approached travel from a less conventional viewpoint. It seemed that betweenThe Travel Book and Alain de Botton's The Art of Travel, there was plenty of fertile ground to try something different.  I'm a fan of TED Talks... well, the good ones.  I like the notion that, no matter the topic, it's fun to have your ideas challenged, to be shown a new way of looking at something. I hope TRAVEL: THE GUIDE achieves this lofty goal.

About the Author Doug Lansky, a writer and a traveler, has chronicled his travels around the world in his hilarious and vividly descriptive column, "The Vagabond." His travels have included cruising up the Amazon on a cargo ship, living and blowgun hunting with Jaguar Indians in Peru, buying a horse and riding it to Colombia, hitchhiking through Syria and Jordan, where he befriended sergeants in the Iraqi military, riding a camel across the desert in India, and sailing down the Nile. Doug's articles have appeared in "Spy" and "Might" magazines as well as in numerous major U.S. daily newspapers. He is also the co-author of "How to Survive High School with Minimal Brain Damage," published when Doug was just sixteen years old.

Adbusters-meets-The Daily Show-meets-Ted Talk--with an oxygen mask By Matthew Anderson This is a superbly crafted, provocative manifesto--for that is what it is, in many ways: a revolt against the anomie of mass travel in a world flattened by the logic of consumption. Lansky has something to say, and he says it with exceptional clarity. He works less with language than with a visual vocabulary and syntax that key images to a sequence of questions, each a koan unto itself, a goad to critical thinking and self-examination. He has been traveling and thinking about travel and writing about travel for over twenty years. This volume represents the distillate of two decades reflection, a synopsis of a kind of critical anthropology of the ideas, practices, imagination, and patterns of consumption of middle to upper-middle class members of North Atlantic civilization when they hit the road. It also marks a move on his part toward engagement. Lansky describes what travel now looks like (it's not pretty), what it might yet be, and where we might turn for clues to a way out of the daze of false consciousness. (The chapter on how some disabled people experience travel is particularly thought-provoking in this regard.) His mode is insightful, focused, alive to its own ironies, and buoyed by the vigorous wit and intelligence of his comedic gifts. The juxtapositions of images remind me of Adbusters; the tone reminds me of the Daily Show; and the arc and economy of the framework remind me of a Ted Talk. That's pretty good company.

A fresh perspective By Random Buyer I thoroughly enjoyed this book, not only because of the great graphics and sometimes hilarious photos that really puts the notion of what travelling is in a new fresh perspective, but also of the angles from which travelling is illuminated and which really makes you stop and think. I don't want to give away any of the sudden insights I (at least) got while reading this book, but if I have to name a favourite chapter, it would be the one about disabled travelling or travelling with special equipment. A must read if you are even remotely interested in travelling!

By MP Tiffin I hope many people read this book and think about what is important and why they are traveling.Full of fantastic, humorous pictures that force you to think about our travel behaviour and some of the crazy things that we do.I would highly recommend this fun book, and I have no doubt it will improve your next travel experience!

American novelist, short story writer, and designer. Wharton was friend and confidante to many gifted intellectuals of her time: Henry James, Sinclair Lewis, Jean Cocteau and André Gide were all guests of hers at one time or another. Bernard Berenson and Kenneth Clark were valued friends as well. Her meeting with F. Scott Fitzgerald is described by the editors of her letters as "one of the better-known failed encounters in the American literary annals". The Age of Innocence (1920) won the 1921 Pulitzer Prize for literature, giving Wharton the honor of being the first woman to win the award.

The pace might have arisen from my expectation that I would get to know the central character, Odo; and that my interests would rise and fall with his fortunes. I conclude, though, that, in writing this book, Edith Wharton had in mind more abstract considerations than the personality of the central character. The Valley Decision, for much of its text, seems to pit religion against liberty and progress. Odo develops progressive ideas, but, when he attempts to place them in operation, the human condition (including prejudice, inertia, and ignorance) blocks him at every turn. Religion, at least in the form of Christianity, earns a better name by the end of the book.I rate this a slow but worthwhile read.

By Carl Ian Schwartz There is a later novel by this title set in 19th-20th Century America by Marcia Davenport--made into a film at MGM in 1945. However, this novel is about an Italian man coming of age in the late 18th Century and becoming the duke of the small northern state where he was born. The language is often difficult--calling for visits to a dictionary--but the content is surprisingly up-to-date, even for these times. It's an early novel by Wharton, published in 1902, and will stay with the literate reader--well worth the investment in time!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Rich Tapestry of Historic Italy By Dave_42 "The Valley of Decision" is Edith Wharton's first long novel, being published in 1902 after her two collections of shorter works, "The Greater Inclination" and "Crucial Instances", and the novella "The Touchstone". It is an impressive work, and Wharton's writing is outstanding as usual. The scope and detail are there, but the execution is not quite up to the level which she would later attain."The story takes place in the later part of the 18th century Italy, and focuses on the life of Odo Valsecca, a man who rises to power over the course of the four books which make up the novel. Odo has to deal with the powers in the form of the nobility, the church, the free-thinking movement, and of course the peasants. Wharton effectively details each of these forces, and creates interesting characters from each to form a novel of incredible richness and depth, but so much time is spent on explaining the period and politics that the development of the characters and the storyline suffer.Book I is titled "The Old Order" and covers Odo's youth. Here we learn about the impact which St. Francis Assisi has on his early years, about the poverty in which he was raised in spite of his noble bloodline, and of course the impact his father's death has on his mother and of course on himself. It is also during this period that Odo meets two friends he will have for the rest of his life, a hunchback which he knows as Brutus, though he later learns his real name is Carlo Gamba, and Vittorio Alfieri, a Count from Asti.Book II is titled "The New Light" and it picks up the story when Odo is a bit older. He has become a young noble, and is learning the ways of the world. He meets free-thinkers, and in particular Professor Orazio Vivaldi and his daughter Fulvia for whom Odo falls in love. Odo's naiveté with regards to court intrigue and the spying which occurs nearly destroys the Professor and his daughter not just once, but twice. Odo goes to live with the Duke of Pianura, the title for which he is in line and for which it is becoming more and more likely for him to inherit. There he falls in with the free-thinkers again, and once again the spies are on to him. Thanks to the Duchess he manages to escape when de Crucis arrives having been commissioned by the Holy Office to look into the free-thinkers. Despite being on opposite sides of the free-thinker issue, Odo comes to like de Crucis.Book III is titled "The Choice", and during this period Odo is free to travel and learn from the free-thinkers thanks to the protection that the Duchess has provided. During this period he once again runs into Fulvia and learns of her father's passing. Fulvia is in a convent, but not free to come and go. He plots an escape with her, but time and again he fails to understand just how much others are able to learn about his planning. With the aid of another sister though, they make their escape and Odo intends to travel with Fulvia into Switzerland. Just before they make their escape, they are found by de Crucis who informs Odo that the Duke has died and that Odo is to be the next Duke. Odo is willing to give it up, but Fulvia reminds him of his obligation to his people and refuses to let Odo accompany her any further.Book IV is titled "The Reward" and covers Odo's time as Duke of Pianura. He tries to push the agenda of the free-thinkers, pushed by his old friend Carlo Gamba and Fulvia Vivaldi, the woman that he loves. But he has been forced to marry the Duchess and play all the political games to deal with the church and the nobles, and it has cost him much popularity. Things come to a head around the constitution that Odo wants to give the people, but the other forces in society work to prevent that from happening. This is a long and complex story, filled with historical and social information about Italy in the late 18th century. The explanations supporting the story ultimately detract from it overall, but it is still a remarkable piece of writing, and as Edith Wharton's first long novel it is definitely of interest.

I thought the characters where wonderful and colorful in true Twain fashion. It was quick and you were not made to lingure too long in one area. I really liked it a lot and I didn't think I would!

I had never heard of this book and it is now my favorite Twain. This story deals with children that were switched at birth; one a black slave and the other a well to do white. The characters are vivid and lively.

It is a bit of a mystery, not a who done it,but will the truth be reviled? There were a few spots that drug on a little longer than I would have liked but it gave you a better glimse into the sleepy town and its people setting. Do take note that it is an older story and slavery is a part of the story.

The D.I.R.E. Agency Series Box Set, Books 4-6, by Joni Hahn

About the Author By day, Joni Hahn keeps her secret decoder ring hidden while she works as a mild-mannered contemporary romance author. She believes the world can never have too many superheroes, and anxiously waits for the call when one will need help saving the world… or getting into his costume. Joni was born with a hopelessly tender heart and believes there is nothing on earth more exhilarating than falling in love. A native Texan, she thinks cowboys are the epitome of masculinity, and that country music is the other soul music. Joni is a member of The Authors Guild, the Romance Writers of America and its Published Authors Network. She is a member of several RWA sub-chapters and has served in numerous board positions with the San Antonio Romance Authors. When she isn’t writing, she enjoys reading, going to movies and concerts, and spending time with family and friends.

By Rather Be Reading These 3 books were much better than the first 3 because it wasn't such a soap opera theme (see my previous review). In the first set all the children of the original adults of the agency ended up blood-related to each other- even the villain's kids were related to the others! And they were all hooking up with each other! Ha! This set still had the made-for-TV sci-fy plots which were still very entertaining- but I kept wondering at the safeness of all the enhancements that they kept getting. Each one was different, so they all ended up being the Guinea Pigs for each enhancement with dangerous limitations or side effects. Like one of them had to eat mega carbs to stay at a safe level for his super strength, and I kept thinking about all the things that could go very wrong while out on an Op. What if there's no food available immediately following a take-down, or what if he somehow ends up unconscious? How are they going to get carbs into him then? These enhancements needs major adjustments and backup safeties, and it sort of took away from my enjoyment of the stories thinking about them. But I could definitely see this as a TV series to off-set Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Fun.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. In D.I.R.E. need By Angie_stl 3 1/2 StarsI love the stories and the originality of the characters, but these books need some editing. There are phrases that are awkward and they are used throughout the series. They were enough to be slightly distracting but not enough to make me stop reading. I think out of the six books, book six, Dylan, was my favorite. The heroine has Multiple Sclerosis, and Ms Hahn does a wonderful job of showing what living with a chronic, debilitating condition is like. Many things are brought up in Teague's thoughts that someone that doesn't know what living with this type of condition might never realize happens. So kudos to Ms Hahn and the person she thanks in the beginning of book six for helping her with the symptoms and reality of MS.I would recommend this series to any PNR/UF fan that can overlook some editing and phrasing issues. It's almost more into the fantasy/ futuristic realm than regular PNR, but as a huge fan of PNR/UF, I enjoyed the stories very much and think it would go over well for most fans of both genres.

By Amazon Customer Well written, good romance without having to deal with 48 pages of one sex scene. (I mean I like a little sex, but there's a point that it gets ridiculous) This had just the right amount of everything. I like the heroes and their crazy capabilities.

    About the Author

Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in numerous languages. And many, many Curious George books have followed.
