  • The Apology (Greek: Ἀπολογία Σωκράτους; Apologia Socratis) is Plato's version of the speech given by Socrates as he defended himself in 399 BC[2] against the charges of "corrupting the young, and by not believing in the gods in whom the city believes, but in other daimonia that are novel" (24b). "Apology" here has its earlier meaning (now usually expressed by the word "apologia") of speaking in defense of a cause or of one's beliefs or actions (from the Greek ἀπολογία). The general term apology, in context to literature, defends a world from attack (opposite of satire-which attacks the world). The Apology, which depicts the death of Socrates, is among the four Plato dialogues to detail the philosopher's final days, along with Euthyphro, Phaedo, and Crito.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Seed of Philosophy Reported by Plato By THREEKAY This book is Plato’s version of the defence of Socrates by himself in the court of law. The defence of Socrates is divided into three main parts.1) The defence2) Argument to mitigate the penalty imposed on him3)Criticism or disapproval of death sentence.Meletus and Anytus, the main accusers of Socrates on three points that 1) Socrates doesn’t believe in Gods followed by the kingdom but advises his followers to believe in the sons of those Gods 2) Socrates is an evil doer, who searches into things under the earth and above the Sun 3) Socrates amassed huge wealth while imparting knowledge to youth, thus corrupting them. Socrates was never interested in pleading innocence in the court of law as he considered death as an eternal sleep and that one is blessed with ‘death’ to get transformed into next birth. He cleverly argues all the accusations made on him through his excellent advocacy which in turn confirm his knowledge and grip over philosophy to the greatest heights of his time. The book brings out the mind of Socrates in his own words. The way he confronts Meletus and Anytus with intelligent questioning and self explanatory answers surprise the entire court hall, including the judges. The speech goes as an Apology and at the same time rebuke of the false accusations made on him. He prays to people of Athens to try and understand his philosophy in his own style of words which may appear harsh to audience who were not ready to listen to him.Positives: Wisdom redefined. Socrates Philosophy though difficult to understand, is brought down to near simplification, thanks to Plato and his translations. The last days of Socrates, which pulled him to court of law are some of the best teachings of Socrates, remembered by the world, and proclaimed him to be the “Father of Philosophy”.Negatives: The book will and shall remain as a wonder to many who refuse to accept Socrates philosophy as the seed of modern world philosophical heritage. My rating is 3.5 out of 5

People have been reading it for 2400 years for a reason By dmmd07 When a book has been around for 2400 years, you can be pretty sure it's good and worth reading. This one is no exception. There are a dozen lines worth remembering, and by the end, you can hear the ironic desperation in Socrates's voice: "The hour of departure has arrived, and we go our ways--I to die, and you to live. Which is better God only knows."Smarter people than I have read and analyzed this work. I don't pretend to know what it's "really about," but the chord struck in me was the conflict between principled stubbornness and unprincipled survival. Socrates talks it out.People have been reading this for 2400 years. You should jump on the bandwagon.

Adam Scott leads an ordinary life, in an ordinary house, on an ordinary street, in an ordinary neighborhood where – much to his disappointment – nothing happens that’s out of the ordinary. At least not until the day he runs into a mysterious hooded figure in a white cloak who tries to kill him. As Adam flees the assassin, he finds help from strangers who whisk him away to an extraordinary place – the world of the Unseen. A place where objects behave like people. A place where people behave like superhumans. A place where plants eat meat, pets aim to kill, and rugs can fly. In this hidden world, Adam finds a new home (that isn’t so ordinary) and an unexpected adventure that takes him from never-ending palaces to beast-ridden jungles to treasure-filled caves. All the while, Adam tries to figure out why anyone would want him dead, and what it's got to do with an ancient prophecy that nobody knows much about – except for one thing: It's about Adam.

A maritime history professor teams-up with a Naval Intelligence agent to search the Caribbean for lost treasure in this fact-filled adventure. Employing authentic "psychic spy" methods and unconventional sailors, they search time and exotic islands for gold and silver hoarded by legendary Mexican dictator and Alamo villain General Santa Anna. To make headway, Thayer Harris, PhD explores 1860s St. Thomas, then capital of the Danish West Indies, one of the world's busiest ports and Santa Anna's retirement home. Dr. Harris uncovers a mysterious connection between the ex-dictator and President Lincoln's Secretary of State, battles the 19th-century's worst hurricane and takes on unscrupulous corporate treasure hunters. This is the second Thayer Harris adventure. The first, "Undocumented Visitors in a Pirate Sea," was a quarter-finalist in the 2014 Amazon Breakthrough Novel contest. It is available on Amazon.com.

About the Author A free-lance journalist and public affairs consultant in Washington D.C. and New York City, Jeff's by-lined work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, USA-UK Magazine and the online political daily Truth-Out. Now Caribbean Correspondent for the Alexandria, VA, Old Town Crier magazine, he and his family divide their time between Virginia and the Virgin Islands. Jeff is author of "Undocumented Visitors in a Pirate Sea," a 2014 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Quarter-Finalist. It chronicles the fictional adventures of maritime historian Dr. Thayer Harris hired by Naval Intelligence to investigate certain deadly Caribbean phenomena. A Truth-Out review describes "Undocumented Visitors" as a "blending of history, UFO [incidents], science fiction, sailing and travel lore, the fractures of the national security state and idiosyncrasies of border policing into a potent sort of literary beach-side rum punch, complete with a happy paper parasol.” Dr. Harris' adventures continue in "Santa Anna's Gold in a Pirate Sea." The intrepid Professor employs CIA "psychic spy" methods and an extraordinary crew of Caribbean sailors to search time and ship wrecks for lost treasure horded by Mexican dictator and legendary Alamo villain General Santa Anna. Jeff was trained as an historian and economist and is an avid sailor. He has lived and worked in London, New York, Washington, DC and the Virgin Islands.

With humor and sensitivity, a debut novelist explores the coming of age of a girl caught between two cultures as she finds the courage to forge a new destiny."Miss, will you be my Amiga?" Amiga means "friend" in Spanish, but at the youth center, it meant a lady to take you places. I never asked myself if two people as different as Miss and me could ever really be amigas. When Jacinta Juarez is paired with a rich, famous mentor, she is swept away from the diapers and dishes of her own daily life into a world of new experiences. But crossing la linea into Miss’s world is scary. Half of Jacinta aches for the comfort of Mamá and the familiar safety of the barrio, while the other half longs to embrace a future that offers more than cleaning stuff for white people. When her family is torn apart, Jacinta needs to bring the two halves of herself together to win back everything she's lost. Can she channel the power she’s gained from her mentor and the strength she’s inherited from Mamá to save her shattered home life?

Look Both Ways in the Barrio Blanco, by Judith Robbins Rose

From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—Jacinta may not know much about the world outside the barrio, but she knows how to grab a chance with both hands and make it work for her. When a well-known news anchorwoman comes to report on her youth center, Jacinta uses a combination of luck, cunning, and raw emotion to guilt "Miss" into becoming her amiga and mentor. As she and and Miss get closer and come to know each other's families over the next year, they frustrate and learn from one another, and ultimately precipitate a crisis in Jacinta's already fraught life. Miss is also far from perfect, and she struggles openly with professional, personal, and financial issues, but Jacinta's dangers tend to be more immediate—her parents are both undocumented, and her family faces eviction, deportation, and the violence and uncertainty of re-entry. The story is narrated from Jacinta's point of view after the fact, with both additional exposition and regretful foreshadowing. This allows the author a greater range of perspective, but makes Jacinta's experiences less immediate, more told than shown. The plotting is rough and choppy but the characters burn through the page. Jacinta with her fierce neediness, Miss with her irritability, fear, condescension/confusion, and basic decency. It's as pleasurable to watch these characters take one another by surprise as it is horribly anxiety-producing to see them hurt, stumble, insult, and misunderstand nearly every situation requiring contextual awareness. Rose doesn't sugarcoat the hypocrisies and tough realities of the relationship, and of the very real reasons that they mistrust one another. Nearly everyone in the book makes some some pretty serious and unforgivable mistakes, but as flawed humans they are allowed to wear their flaws, to make mature decisions and stupid childish ones. Rather than writing an "issue book," Rose presents characters in crisis, whose stories are personal, rather than broadly representative, and the book is better for it. Ultimately, this is a story about code switching, and about the different skill sets and assumptions required for complex cross-cultural and cross-class situations. VERDICT An interesting first novel that treats its complex characters with unusual dignity.—Katya Schapiro, Brooklyn Public Library

Review Rose presents characters in crisis, whose stories are personal, rather than broadly representative, and the book is better for it. Ultimately, this is a story about code switching, and about the different skill sets and assumptions required for complex cross-cultural and cross-class situations. An interesting first novel that treats its complex characters with unusual dignity.—School Library JournalRose convincingly depicts Jacinta’s struggles as she explores aspects of upper-middle-class culture—French and gymnastics lessons, theater and ballet performances—while coping with the instability and grimness of barrio life and desperately missing her mother...A moving portrayal of a girl’s effort to embrace both her Mexican roots and the possibilities of American life, as well as an affecting look at an important contemporary issue.—Publishers WeeklyThis smart debut is a poignant exploration of cultural variations and family ties through the eyes of a lovable and funny narrator. Timely in its look at the plight of undocumented immigrants and their American-born children, it is a story of empowerment against the shadows of life in the barrio.—BooklistJacinta’s story gives readers insight into the world of immigrant families and their difficult lives: the fear of discovery, the poverty, distrust of anyone who is not Mexican.—VOYAI loved "Look Both Ways in the Barrio Blanco" for its passionate story telling and unflagging integrity. I kept on turning the page thinking there's no way the author can sustain the tension and feeling without resorting to cliches and sentimentality, but somehow she does.—Chicago TribuneA valiant effort that wrestles with important, complex themes.—Kirkus Reviews

My Parents Won't Let Me Go To Bed by Peter Raber was purchased as a stocking stuffer for my nephew. He loves it, and perhaps more importantly, his parents and and his aunt and uncle thought it was great. Mr. Raber's humorous story of a little bear who's parents are pretty relatable to a night owl like myself is matched by adorable illustrations that Raber inked himself. I have seen Raber's/Heartdrive Media's other work via their iOS app Pete's Robot. Mr. Raber obviously understands children and has a knack for telling a story - I'd recommend My Parents Won't Let Me Go To Bed to anyone and everyone.

We received this book as a gift and we're so excited to read it simply because the title is hilarious and such a funny concept! Our son is 9 months old and we read books with him every night. He LOVED this book. Not because he could understand it (we parents loved it because of how fun-loving and silly it is), but because of the fun illustration. He was literally bouncing up and down and waving his hands around while we read it to him. I would HIGHLY recommend this cute children's book. It's different than anything else out there and such a fun read.

Double Mayhem is fast-paced with fun plot twists and vivid character development By Jesster While this could stand alone, it is a sequel which follows evenly from the first book, Double Mayhem, which really should be read first. Double Mayhem is fast-paced with fun plot twists and vivid character development, particularly Doris and Della Jamay. Both return in the sequel, and we learn more about them as they are drawn to New Orleans and ultimately the Caymans to rescue Della Jamay's niece, who has been kidnapped by a sex-slavery ring. The dark arenas of voodoo and sex-trafficking are well balanced with humor and universal family dynamics as Della Jamay, an extremely private, possibly sociopathic, assassin reluctantly invites Doris to spend time with her immediate relations. Fun, escapist reading. Ready for the next one!
