Voncara Cove By Amazon Customer The author, George L Babec, did an excellent job of getting me pulled into his characters’ lives and the adventures of his story as I experienced many emotions and excitement as he took me on a journey of science fiction. The author’s major characters grow from loving each other as teenagers to adults as he took me on their journey with their close friends.Jase and Nattie have to deal with many circumstances that constantly occur, giving their lives many twists and turns that drew me into their lives and onto their exciting journey as they handle every situation they encounter. Their love grows stronger and stronger and when there is a tragedy I was pulled into a frantic of emotions and tears. The author has a very active imagination as shown throughout the book as he describes in detail the characters, the clothing, the settings, the environment, and plot. He makes the towns, the ships, and all locations come to life. I wanted to visit some of the locations and the town’s café.As the story continues I was enjoying the encounter of space battles and realized that the author definitely has a great scientific mind as he took me into another world.I really enjoyed Voncara Cove. I think it would make a great movie.

George Babec did a really great in this book just like his other works. I spent the last night reading this serial, got hardly no sleep. But it's was so worth it. Kept me in suspense the entire time. Great characters and original story. What I like about this book is that it isn't the same plot with other romance books I've read. Every chapter was unexpected that you'll definitely want to finish reading the entire book. The main characters - Jase and Nattie were engaging. I was especially impressed with how the author built personalities from primary sources, then carried them convincingly into his imaginary history/pocket universe. I thoroughly enjoyed this graphic collection, and would willingly purchase a sequel.I will absolutely recommend it to my reading friends.

The characters are well studied and the author does an incredible job of fleshing them out and digging into their inner beings. Because the characters are so compelling, when tragedy strikes it hits you hard. Nattie is bright and fun and I loved reading her as she is quite the firecracker! She is resourceful and full of heart and I’m sure any reader would fall in love with her. The romance in the story is thick and delicious almost palpable. The author expertly executes the dialogue between the characters and it comes of very naturally. This is a fabulous book and I cannot wait to read more! A++

“Where the pole beans climb, where the tomatoes grow fat, where the onions smell sweet and the corn is yellow as the summer sun, that’s the garden of Clem — Farmer Clem.” So begins this story about Baby Mouse, a tiny mouse who loves to go exploring in the garden. But watch out! You never know what might happen when Baby climbs into a head of lettuce, or up a tomato plant, or when there’s a fox on the prowl. These are some of the ingredients of The Pea Patch Jig — a book as refreshing as a summer evening in Vermont.Inspired by the traditional song "The Pea Patch Jig," which was unearthed by the great songwriter singer John Hartford.

The Pea Patch JigFrom Creston Books

From Publishers Weekly Baby Mouse gets into mischief in triplicate in these three separate but equally antic stories about a tiny family that lives by Farmer Clem's garden. Ages 3-6. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 1 Colorful, lively, funny, original. Right away children will expect something special: on the front cover Baby Mouse, in her diaper and red bow, dances with her folks. A dazzling arrangement of garden vegetables decorates the white endpapers. This is the overture, and when the action begins every page is a discovery and a smile. Over in the garden that Farmer Clem unknowingly shares with the tiny Mouse family, preparations are on for a midsummer party. Mother and Father Mouse have their backs turned, so Baby wanders away. She soon tires and climbs into a head of lettuce to rest. Meanwhile, Farmer Clem gathers his salad fixings, including (you guessed it) the very lettuce that shelters our young explorer. A brave rescue follows, and more adventures, too. In a grand finale, costumed mice kick up their heels while Grandpa fiddles away at The Pea Patch Jig. Those natty alligators dancing the night away in Mama Don't Allow (Harper, 1984) never had more fun than this crowd. Anna Biagioni Hart, Sherwood Regional Library, Alexandria, Va.Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review "Colorful, lively, funny, original." — School Library Journal, Starred ReviewSchool Library Journal, Best Book of the Year 1986"Illustrations in brilliant, glowing primary colors and a simple text tell the story of Father Mouse, Mother Mouse, and Baby Mouse. . . Energy pulsates throughout the whole book, from the endpapers of crisp, juicy vegetables to the mice dancing in their garden costumes. . . A festive salad of a book, filled with snap, crackle, and crunch."— The Horn Book"Lively visual humor, luminous color and a sure sense of design bring the simple text to vibrant life."— Kirkus Reviews"Though the baby mouse in Hurd's latest frolic is still in diapers, she already has a mind of her own. . . Hurd's fluid paintings make Farmer Clem's garden a cheerful camouflage for the Mouse family and their willful baby; his kaleidoscopic colors and mischievous sense of humor make this book ripe for the picking."— Publishers Weekly"Bright, jazzy shapes and colors complement this sprightly ode to vegetables, which concludes with a joyous hoe-down in the moonlight, the mice dressed up as vegetables, Baby as a bright green pea."— University of Chicago, Bulletin for Children's Books"Hurd has concocted a high-spirited story about a mouse family who lives on Farmer Clem's property. . . The artwork is some of Hurd's best, featuring bright watercolors in summertime hues and strong, energetic line work. The action fairly skips across the pages, and children will feel the music of the original 'Pea Patch Jig' that is included, even without hearing it."— Booklist". . .a delightful children's story about a family of mice who dwell quietly in a lovely garden patch tended by Farmer Clem. Incredibly delicate, expressive watercolor illustrations bring the exuberant Mouse family to life in their vegetable patch home. There are exciting moments (Baby Mouse crawls away to sleep in a lettuce, ending up in Farmer Clem's salad basket), dramatic moments (a fox appears to raid the Mouse family in the garden at night), and festive moments (the Mouse family has a garden party, with dancing, vegetable costumes, music, and moonlight) galore.'The Pea Patch Jig' dances merrily through pages of fabulous illustrations, vibrant vegetables, and one courageous Baby Mouse who saves the day with her pea shooting skills."--Midwest Book Review"Back in print, Hurd’s exuberant picture book is inspired by the folksong of the same name, but contains a straightforward narrative text. The story is broken into three chapters but can be read straight through like a regular picture book. The plot concerns a mouse family living in the garden of Farmer Clem, and their preparations for a party.Hurd’s joyous, deeply colored watercolor and ink cartoonish illustrations feature mice characters in human dress, similar to many of his other books such as Mama Don’t Allow (1984) and Mystery on the Docks (1983). There is a looseness to the drawings, that combine with the deep colors to depict a warm, homey atmosphere that suits the story well. Libraries will want to purchase this reissue to replace old worn copies of this popular book by a Bay Area author."--Bay Views and more. . .

While Baby Mouse is shooting peas out of her window and scaring away foxes, Father Mouse is knocking blenders onto Farmer Clem's shoulder! So venture into a wonderful children's book where 'The corn is as bright as the summer sun'!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. it a great first experience with "Chapter Books" while still being fully ... By Peg This book is a must read for parents to share with their pre-schoolers ... it a great first experience with "Chapter Books" while still being fully illustrated. My daughter was only two when we checked this book out from our local library. We walked there every week and would bring home our limit but she always wanted to keep the Pea Patch Jig an extra week. Then we would return it and a few weeks later she would see it back on the table in the Children's section of the Library and bring it back to me begging to check it out again. It wasn't long before she could "read" the entire book on her own. We took a video of this which to this day is my favorite video. A two year old reading a "chapter book" turning each page and "reading" each word while vocalizing all the appropriate expressions to match the written words. She is 26 now and I have purchased two of these books ... one for her home, and one for mine. Thank you Thacher Hurd for planting the seed that grew into an enduring love of books in my daughter ... she now has a Masters degree in English, teaches High School English, and besides being a gifted song writer, she is now in the process of writing her own novels.

The Pea Patch Jig By VICKIE DUFF I thought I had saved most of the books my kids loved; I loaned them to my sister for her twins, and when they outgrew them, she called me one day to see if I wanted them back. I did! My then-teenagers and I sat around the kitchen table and laughed as we read our favorite stories one more time. Then I put them away for my future grandchildren. Now I have 3 grandchildren, and have been reading those favorites to the oldest 2 for 5 years. Last year my son and his wife had their first baby, and for his first birthday, my son asked me to get him a copy of the Pea Patch Jig. I immediately remembered it, but also remembered we had read it to pieces and it was not in my collection. So, I found it through Amazon and it arrived in time for Ian's first birthday. What a hilarious story it is, and the artwork is fabulous. I highly recommend this book to anyone with kids 2 and up. It's so funny!

  • The Last of the Mohicans: A Narrative of 1757 (1826) is a historical novel by James Fenimore Cooper. It is the second book of the Leatherstocking Tales pentalogy and the best known to contemporary audiences. The Pathfinder, published 14 years later in 1840, is its sequel. The Last of the Mohicans is set in 1757, during the French and Indian War (the Seven Years' War), when France and Great Britain battled for control of North America. During this war, both the French and the British used Native American allies, but the French were particularly dependent, as they were outnumbered in the Northeast frontier areas by the more numerous British colonists. The novel is primarily set in the upper New York wilderness, detailing the transport of the two daughters of Colonel Munro, Alice and Cora, to a safe destination at Fort William Henry. Among the caravan guarding the women are the frontiersman Natty Bumppo, the Major Duncan Heyward, and the Indians Chingachgook and Uncas, the former of whom is the novel's title character. These characters are sometimes seen as a microcosm of the budding American society, particularly with regards to their racial composition.

From School Library Journal Grade 3-5-A bare-bones adaptation of the classic novel. The simplified text is action packed, but the dialogue is stilted and the descriptive passages are uninspired. However, these flaws will not deter students looking for frontier adventure or a book about the movie (about the book). Several large pencil illustrations are included, but no map accompanies the historical note. Not a necessary purchase, but it may hook reluctant readers.Gale W. 111 of 116 people found the following review helpful. An essential early American novel By Michael J. Mazza James Fenimore Cooper's novel "The Last of the Mohicans" (subtitled "A Narrative of 1757"), is a remarkable book for many reasons. First published in 1826, the book represents an early attempt to create substantial literary art from the material of North American history and geography. Although the book has its flaws, it is for the most part a success. In the novel, the white woodsman Hawk-eye and his Mohican Indian comrade Chingachgook join forces to help the daughters of a white military officer through hostile territory. The story takes place in a colonial American setting marked by conflict between French and English forces -- a conflict that also involves various Indian nations. There are a number of exciting (and often graphically violent) scenes of battle and chase. Hawk-eye, a white man who, to a large degree, rejects European-American values, is a fascinating figure -- indeed, he is one of the most enduring fictional creations in all of United States literature. Through the mouths of Hawk-eye and the various Indian characters, Cooper offers some intriguing criticisms of white culture. As I said, the book is not without flaws. The momentum of the book lags for a brief stretch, and some of Cooper's characters (in particular, his women) at times sound a bit stereotypical. But the overall power and intelligence of Cooper's work is undeniable. Particularly impressive is his re-creation of a multilingual world of complex cultural and personal conflict. Also noteworthy is his evocation of the American landscape. A tale of death and survival, of betrayal and loyalty, and, above all, of the extraordinary bond between a white man and an Indian, "The Last of the Mohicans" is one classic that deserves to be read and reevaluated by each generation.

In their chronological order, with their order of publication in parentheses, they are: The Deerslayer (5), The Last of the Mohicans (2), The Pathfinder (4), The Pioneers (1) and The Prairie (3). So if you want to read them in either chronological or published order, you should read Mohicans second. But each novel is self-contained, so if you want to try just one, to decide if the rest are worth reading, then Mohicans is the one to start with, as it is his most famous work and generally acknowledged to be his best. The hero of these tales, the improbably named Nathaniel Bumppo (or Natty, or Deerslayer, or Hawkeye, or The Long Rifle, or...etc, etc) was the first, and remains the quintessential, all-American fictional hero; brave, noble, honest and more at home in the wilderness than the town. He is not however, the strong, silent type. He has a habit of launching into long, rambling streams of homespun philosophy at the drop of a coonskin cap. Never mind that lead shot is flying thick and fast around his ears, he will lean on his rifle and expound on the different natures of Indians and whites, or the evils of literacy. The plot of Mohicans is action-packed, but is linear - no surprise twists, and no sub-plots - and contains some highly improbable elements. Well, would you be fooled by an enemy disguised as a beaver? Michael Mann's excellent 1992 screen version reworked the plot extensively, to its advantage.Cooper was the first distinctively American novelist and was inspired by Walter Scott, the inventor of the historical novel. He was consciously attempting to emulate Scott but, although he writes quite well, he lacks Scott's lyricism. And his characters, specially the women, are resiliently two-dimensional. But he did capture the spirit of the frontier, the pride and pain of a new and growing country, and in doing so created myths out of America's past that have survived, evolved, and have sustained the nation, ever since.

93 of 101 people found the following review helpful. a piece of history By Kayo Smada I thought that this was an excellent study of the European-Indian relationships and intertribal relationships among the Americam Indians. There are some gruesome scenes; I feel it is probably a fairly accurate account of practices at that time amongst those tribes. At times the narrative gets wordy because of the details of the history and traditions. I can't believe this book was taught in the 5-8 grades in this country 30 years ago. I don't think the majority of 12th graders could read this book with ease.

By mamabee1314 I have loved every single Fisher Price Little People book since I can remember, and this one is no exception!! I LOVE the lift the flaps, my kids were literally entertained for hours discovering oh Santa is here!! Oh look, presents!! I am working to really instill a love of reading in my kids, who are both still really young( 2 and 1), and so far they have been latching on to reading like crazy!! And these books make it easy. Bright colors, fun flaps to find cool things, an easy to follow story line, and with it being a hard board book, its durable and lasts through my toddlers fighting over it over and over again. Another great Fisher Price book!!

Later we realized this version has different illustrations than the other Little People flap books - the people aren't nearly as cute and "rounded" and the illustrations were far busier. What a bummer! We ended up getting the same book as our original (confusingly titled the exact same "Christmastime is Here") at Target, where we could verify the illustrations were more like the other Little People flip books (such as the school, zoo and Noah's ark ones).

By Heather In the previous book, Casey and Nate tripped back and seriously messed up their own timeline. Casey returned to the past, fixed it, then returned home to a fixed timeline, but a broken relationship with Nate. Their breakup sends Casey back to the 1920s, right into the path of ANOTHER time traveler. He recognises Casey as a kindred soul and takes her back with him to the time of Paul Revere... who just happens to be Paul Jr's father! Paul Jr wants Casey to help him make sure the historical midnight ride goes off as as scheduled. But Casey knows what happens now when she meddles with the time line, should she help? And if she does, is she ready to face more changes to her own timeline... Including Nate ending up with (gasp) Jessica! This book has Casey tripping back and forth through altered time lines, trying to find the right one and ending up in ones that are just not right. Can anyone help her make it back to her own?The characters have matured and grown, while tripping, Casey learns some things about herself, including the fact that she' strong and can handle just about anything time throws at her... Well, almost anything...Very good read for YA and adults alike. Totally recommend this author!I received a free copy of this book for an honest review. I love this series!

By Mandy @ I Read Indie When we finished with COUNTER CLOCKWISE, none of us readers knew what to expect. Casey’s life was spiraling out of control; messing with her personal life and her time traveling life as well. With the way things were going she may have changed the world as she knew it for the worse. Only time will tell if she will be able to right all her wrongs...There is no easy way to review this book without giving away major plots and spoilers. But I loved it! I quickly read through this book and loved every second of it. The not knowing of where Casey would end up every time she tripped was what pulled me in. And if she ended up changing her present world was what had me hanging on to every word. I was scared about her future. So many things were changing with each trip that you never knew what to expect. If you have been keeping up with the amazing series then you are most definitely going to want to read this book. If you haven't caught up this far in the series, then what are you waiting for? Hurry!! It is a must read! 5 Stars!

This story was a fitting end for the series. I hate to see Casey and Nate's story end. This picks up right where Counter Clockwise leaves off. Casey's reeling from the breakup with Nate and that sends her tripping back in time. Also, she meets another time traveler and she gets sucked into another time line with Paul Revere Jr. where she has to help him fix things. The title for this story is so fitting because once again the time loop is messed up, and nothing is as it should be so Casey is tripping from timeline to timeline trying to fix her time loop. Casey continues to grow as a character in this story. She realizes that she is a strong person, and when push comes to shove she can get herself out of her own messes. I think this story was about Casey realizing who she is and not relying on others to get her out of trouble. She was definitely a stronger character by the end of this book. However, I love Nate as well, and I wanted to see more of him in this story. Also, I felt that the ending was rushed. Love the series overall!

Fresh from the slaughter at Bastogne, Sgt. C.J. Mahoney rejoins Charlie Company of Patton’s Hammerhead Division. His new commander is glory-seeking Lt. Woodward, a stiff-spined West Pointer who wields his rank like a bullwhip—all of it stinging Mahoney’s hide. Just as the Sergeant is about to rearrange his new superior officer’s baby face, German bullets and grenades burst through the heavy snowfall. Slicing his way through the blood and guts of no-man’s-land with his kill-crazy sidekick Cranepool, Mahoney is singled out by Woodward for a volley of arrogant abuse. Burning at both ends, the Sergeant blasts hell at Hitler’s advancing troops, saving the entire company from oblivion. Mahoney is up for the Silver Star—but first he vows to settle the score with a particular backstabbing lieutenant! LEN LEVINSON, ALIAS GORDON DAVIS Hailed as a ‘trash genius’, Len Levinson was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, served on active duty in the U.S. Army from 1954-1957, and graduated from Michigan State University with a BA in Social Science. He relocated to NYC that year and worked as an advertising copywriter and public relations executive before becoming a full-time novelist. Len created and wrote a number of series, including The Apache Wars Saga, The Pecos Kid and The Rat Bastards. He has had over eighty titles published, and PP is delighted to have the opportunity to issue his exceptional WWII series, The Sergeant in digital form. After many years in NYC, Len moved to a small town (pop. 3100) in rural Illinois, where he is now surrounded by corn and soy bean fields ... a peaceful, ideal location for a writer.
