I enjoyed reading Mr. Muntjes impressions of various landscapes that I know well from having visited most of the places where he traveled. I enjoyed hearing the perspective of someone from a different culture and from someone so deeply committed to travel by bicycle.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Treasure By Holly Raphael This book was an impulse buy because it was inexpensive but it has become one of my family's favorites. A beautiful, lyrical retelling of the bible tale with wonderful pictures and incredible insight into human nature. My three year old loves it and even quotes from it occasionally. What a delight!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very nice retelling By txjanet The pictures are very beautiful, and the story well told and expanded from the Bible version, while still remaining true to it, for explanation and understanding. I really liked the art, and its different feels of the warm desert colors, the cool ocean colors, and the way the story is expanded in the details of the art (ie you can look at the picture of the Assyrian city and see different people doing "wicked" things, some people hungry while others are feasting, some people using others as slaves to do hard work, some people robbing others, etc). I would say that this telling is probably for children a little older, probably 6 or 7 years plus. My 5 year old enjoys it, but I don't think she really understands what is going on in the story --not the fault of the telling, just that this is a complicated story to explain, and this one goes a little deeper than just telling how he was inside a fish for three days. This book will grow with us.

A Wrinkled Heart is a touching and delightful story about learning to be kind to others. This book is based on a folktale long used by teachers around the world. One beautiful morning, Elliott, a young bunny, joyfully gets up and ready for his school day. At breakfast, he is scolded for spilling some milk, and his heart wrinkles a little bit. At school, Elliott encounters some friends who hurt his feelings and his heart wrinkles even more… until it's all wrinkled up! Later, his friends and family apologize for their hurtful words and try to take the wrinkles out. Elliott feels better, but some wrinkles get left behind. He decides to always be careful with his words so he doesn't wrinkle anyone's heart. Readers learn the importance of kindness, friendship and the Golden Rule. A Wrinkled Heart is the perfect tool for teachers, school counselors and parents to help develop empathy in preschoolers and elementary children, and can be used as part of a lesson plan on character and social development. The charming, yet sophisticated illustrations by Lindy Burnett, draw you right into the woodland life of little Elliott, his family, and forest friends. There is a page with "Simple Ways to be Kind to Others" and an activity for cutting out a paper heart to wrinkle as the story is told…. a perfect visual aid!

What do you do if your lover turns out to be an enemy spy? This WWII love story celebrates the resilience of people and the power of love. It revolves around a conspiracy by the DeBeers diamond company that not only manipulated wartime decisions, but still impacts almost every modern-day marriage. British pilot Emily Rhodes, burning for revenge over the loss of her brother on the bloody shores of Dunkirk, enlists to shuttle aircraft in-country. The family estate in Africa of her lover, built upon gold and diamond mining, is assimilated by the diamond cartel. As war breaks out, Michael Hawthorne finds himself trapped in Britain, determined to break the company that swallowed his future in a single bite. Hank Wells is in charge of the new U.S. DeBeers ad campaign at his New York agency when Pearl Harbor upends his country and life. His knowledge of the world of diamonds launches him into Emily’s life, and onto the global stage as a spy for the O.S.S. Emily’s wartime duties become unexpectedly dangerous and exciting as she’s drawn into the intrigue of espionage. Encountering these characters in their complicated dance that spans the globe is no less than the creator of James Bond himself, Ian Fleming.

About the Author Greg Cohen's fiction explores the literary version of photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson's "The decisive moment"; those fleeting, defining instants when entire lives can change. His writing is supervised by two cats and a dog, all who wish he would write more about animals. His short fiction has appeared in the Eureka Literary Magazine, Bellowing Ark, City Primeval and the Belletrist Review. One of his characters speaks for Greg's life-long love of the arts when she tells her son, "Here's the best thing about art, Theo...it's not necessary. People can't survive without certain things: food, water, shelter, tools. But no one ever died from art starvation, honey. It's not essential to the body, but it is to the soul. Art is something we're driven to do, not compelled to do." That belief fuels his work not only as a writer, but in his pursuits as a photographer and musician, and he's recently begun to paint, working with acrylics. Born and raised in Colorado, he's lived in California, Washington, Nevada and Alaska. His love of motion and travel has taken him through most of the 50 states as well as China, Mexico, Spain, Finland, Russia, South Africa and Australia. Greg is also a graphic designer, business consultant and grant writer for non-profits.

Serpentine, by Cindy Pon

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Skybright never knew her parents. She was raised by an affluent Chinese family who took her into their home to be a handmaid to their daughter, Zhen Ni. The two grew up as close as sisters, best friends and confidants who shared everything. Skybright loves her mistress, but as both girls grow up, changes start to occur. While Zhen Ni finds love in a new friendship, Skybright discovers a new side of herself, one filled with darkness. She fights to balance her duties, the love she has for another, and this evil within herself. Skybright struggles to maintain her true self, as well as to hide what she is becoming from her closest friend. The teen doesn't know who she is anymore. Is she a servant, a friend, a lover, or a demon? Could she be all of these things, or must she choose one? This coming-of-age story takes readers on a fantastical journey through friendship and Chinese mythology. YA fans will love Pon's storytelling ability and the immersion into a world filled with love, danger, and fantasy. VERDICT Readers will be begging for a sequel to find out what happens to these intriguing characters.—Jessica Strefling, US Court of Appeals, Federal Circuit Library (starred review)

Review "This fast-paced fantasy adventure is set in an ancient China of folklore, the same land as Pon’s previous books. Pon’s descriptive writing conjures precise images, as in when describing Skybright’s transformation from human to serpent: “Smooth scales rippled over her human flesh, like dragonfly wings fluttering their way from her feet to cover her abdomen.”At its core, the novel is about friendship, loyalty, and self-acceptance, with characters as delightfully real as any in the realm of young adult literature." —Diane Colson, VOYA Magazine (starred review) “The economical narrative conjures an entire world, drenched in color and texture and scent, rich in evocative mythology and heady action, and filled with vivid characters . . . A fast-paced and engrossing read for anyone weary of the same old hackneyed storylines.”  —Kirkus Reviews"Serpentine's world oozes with lush details and rich lore, and the characters crackle with life. This is one story that you'll want to lose yourself in."  —Marie Lu, author, Prodigy“Vivid worldbuilding, incendiary romance, heart-pounding action, and characters that will win you over--I highly recommend Serpentine.”   —Cinda Williams Chima, author, The Warrior Heir"Serpentine is unique and surprising, with a beautifully-drawn fantasy world that sucked me right in! I love Skybright's transformative power, and how she learns to take charge of it.”  — Kristin Cashore, author, Bitterblue“YA fans will love Pon's storytelling ability and the immersion into a world filled with love, danger, and fantasy. Readers will be begging for a sequel to find out what happens to these intriguing characters.”  —School Library Journal (starred review)

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Features a fantastic friendship By Zoey Talbon Reviewing Serpentine is hard because I didn't have particularly strong feelings about it in either direction. In the beginning, I thoroughly enjoyed the writing but wasn't totally invested in the story. And that's pretty much how it went the entire way. The story definitely did get more intriguing, but it didn't feel as if it had enough intricate and fleshed-out details to seem believable, and so instead I found myself rolling my eyes sometimes.Still, the mythology of Serpentine is something I haven't seen a ton of before, which was refreshing. I felt so immersed in the setting and could picture it so easily. The dark forests, the huge manor, the monks right next door. I know I already used the word refreshing, but it applies here as well.Another good thing that Serpentine does? It tells its tale through the handmaiden rather than the privileged girl who owns the handmaiden. It's obviously not the first book to do so, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a nice break from the upper class. However, Skybright and her mistress, Zhen Ni, are practically sisters. They've known each other since they were babies, grown up together. But there's still a pretty big divide, if you ask me. Zhen Ni is still a mistress. Skybright can never herself marry or have children, and sometimes I feel like the book didn't really make a big enough deal of that. Now, those are things that I don't personally want, but the thing is that I have that choice. I have an option to want it, to do it someday. Skybright never has.Nevertheless, Skybright and Zhen Ni have quite a strong connection. Until, of course, they both start keeping their own secrets from each other. You just know that's not going to end well.As characters, I didn't find either of them particularly interesting. Maybe it's because I couldn't connect to them, I don't know. But not a single one of the characters in Serpentine was particularly remarkable to me. I didn't hate them, no. Skybright's love for Zhen Ni and her strength as she dealt with her own changes were important, sure. But beyond that I just . . . didn't care much, I guess. I was intrigued to find out what was going on with Skybright, where the story would go. But that wasn't really about her.The romance is probably where I have the strongest feelings, because it was just so unbelievable to me. It happened too fast and I didn't feel a genuine connection. I rolled my eyes. Quite a bit. They meet and talk a handful of times throughout the entire novel. In the beginning, Skybright sees Kai Sen for the first time from very far away and she suddenly can't stop thinking about him. Which kind of set the tone for the entire romance. And, of course, a third party sort of enters the picture and I just. WHY. NO THANKS.Of course, Serpentine also features a f/f relationship. YAY! FINALLY! I feel as if we didn't see enough of one of the characters involved, but it was still something nice to see, and it actually does play a part. (AKA it doesn't feel as if it was just thrown in to check off a box.) It's so unfamiliar to many of the characters in the book, unacceptable to some. It was a little heartbreaking to see the damage that simple love between two people could cause.Plotwise and in terms of what's happening to Skybright, it had its weak moments and its stronger moments. The stronger moments were definitely at the end where there were a few plot twists.tl;dr: Serpentine brings a lot of fresh stuff to the table - new mythology, a great setting, a f/f relationship. It features a strong female friendship. But for me, there's a bit of an execution problem. It was hard for me to stay interested and the romance between Skybright and Kai Sen wasn't believable. Still, I enjoyed the writing for the most part and did find a lot of stuff refreshing. Will I be reading the sequel? Probably not. But I do think Serpentine deserves 3 stars.

I was excited to read SERPENTINE because of the setting, which is based in large part on China. I wasn’t disappointed in this respect, but the setting was the only part of the book I was really able to get into. From the beginning, we’re immersed in the setting. I loved how well the details came to life all throughout the story, and it was nice to read a fantasy novel that wasn’t based on Europe. It also made me want to learn more about Chinese history, which isn’t something I’m as familiar with.I wasn’t into the characters at all. I realize that, as a handmaiden, Skybright is expected to fade into the background so as not to overshadow her mistress. But we spend the whole book in her head, so I was hoping there’d be more going on with her. For me, there wasn’t. She spends the whole book centered on the people around her – first her mistress, Zhen Ni, and then the boy she falls in love with, Kai – and we don’t really get to know who Skybright really is. While that isn’t necessarily unrealistic, it didn’t make for the most interesting narration. Also, the romance between Skybright and Kai fell flat for me, in large part because of my aforementioned issues with Skybright. The romance felt really underdeveloped for this reason. We also don’t get to know Kai very well; all I got was that he trains with the monks and that he’s fascinated by Skybright, so I couldn’t get into his character, either. The subplot with Zhen Ni was interesting, though. I don’t want to spoil it, so I won’t give specifics, but I’ll say that it was explored very well through Skybright’s eyes.I think people who prefer quieter heroines will probably have more luck with this one than I did.

By midnight reader It's fun that Pon returns to the Kingdom of XIa in Serpentine - I always enjoy her descriptions of the fantastical kingdom- but she creates a very different heroine in Skybright. As a handmaid in the ancient kingdom, Skybright will never marry, but that doesn't mean she doesn't experience the same emotional and physical changes of every other teen girl including her wealthy mistress Zhen Ni. Different life courses are mapped out for the two young women. Zhen Ni is expected to marry well. Skybright is expected to continue as her celibate handmaid. But one night, everything changes for Skybright. In a shocking and unique twist, Pon turns conventional mythology on its head and in the process Skybright's life course is altered. Zhen Ni faces her own challenges as her mother plots her eventual marriage. This thought provoking book is not the usual teen fantasy in many ways, the most obvious being the diversity of the characters! Hooray! I would follow the Library Guild guidelines and recommend this book to ages twelve and up.

Steele 2014 award winning author for fiction of THE MONEY RUN The Momma's and Poppa's sang Go Where You Wanna Go, Do What You Wannna Do, and Ms. Edsberg hit it out of the ballpark. I always wanted to hop on a box car and see where it'd take me, but she actually did better than that. Sit back and enjoy the book. If you're debating getting it, get a grip--spend the seven dollars and get the kindle. . .it's worth every cent. Ms. Edsberg, I'm pea green with envy.Chapter 25 puts new meaning to "free at last". • From the Inside Flap Excerpt from Memory 13:When she got to the second floor, Marika was surprised by the lack of security. There were no crimson guards, or turreted androids, and as she opened the door to his waiting room, it was empty with the exception of the large vid screens displaying her chopped up recording on the news. The room was majestic, showcasing a shiny, tiled floor of alternating white and black patterns. There were numerous columns carved with elaborate designs that ran from the floor to a ceiling that showcased a mural of Veece during another age. The walls had vid screens but it also had paintings, expensive oil renditions of the different planets. One of the paintings caught her eye immediately, as it showed an enormous portrait of a warrior with his chin out. The arrogant stance and the care in the detail made Marika assume that it was the infamous Palus Felitious. He's handsome, she thought, and smiled beneath her shawl. And here I thought he would look like a monster. She looked around for cameras or androids on patrol, then slipped behind one of the columns that would obscure her from the doors on the opposite side of the room. As the pulse on her wristband warned that the hour for Kyle's departure had come, she pulled out the MCPT-90 "Hammer of Gods" that she had affectionately nicknamed "Little Bit." The gun was one of the most powerful handguns in Anstractor, and unlike the other, more powerful weapons within the arsenal, the MCPT-90 was Vestalian-made. It was a weapon used by officers to punch holes in vessels when times got desperate, but Marika took advantage of its plasma-generated rounds to take out her marks easily. A normal assassin utilized graceful weapons like knives, swords, kinetic pistol rounds, and the traditional bow and arrow. Marika was more pragmatic about killing, however, and wanted to make sure that no matter where her shot hit, it would stop her target from retaliating.
