In the 1980s and early 1990s, freelance writer John W. Perry published numerous travel articles about Polynesia, Melanesia, and Australia in American magazines and newspapers. This collection of 23 articles contains 20 republished articles from those years and three never-before-published articles from the same time period, each with an added introductory paragraph. The articles recount backpacking adventures in Hawai‘i, following in the footsteps of the French artist Paul Gauguin in Tahiti, revisiting a Māori love story in New Zealand, touring a yam garden in the Trobriand Islands in Melanesia, and exploring Australia’s Aboriginal lands in the Northern Territory, among other mini-adventures. Excerpts: “For me, the only real connection with Gauguin in Pape‘ete is the marketplace, still as picturesque and quaint as in Gauguin’s time. Each day is festival day at the market, featuring leis, pigs, ducks, and the fruits of paradise, including bananas, mangoes (a Gauguin phallic symbol in his artwork), and breadfruit.” –From (Tahiti) “The Island of Sensuous Delight.” “The morning I arrived on the island of “two pigtails” a chalked blackboard beside the bar listed the day’s activities, which included putting golf balls on the reef at low tide (I declined) or watching a basket-weaving demonstration near the island’s flagstaff made from a ship’s mast salvaged from a wreck.” –From (Fiji) “The Angels of Heavenly Delight.” “I circumnavigated the heap of yams in imitation of the Victorian child-traveler Alice in Wonderland who tiptoed around a mushroom that served as a seat for a hookah-smoking caterpillar.” –From (Trobriand Islands) “The Moon of Milamala.” “As if in a child’s fairy tale, a pair of herons welcomed me to the island, each parading across the roof of my reef-side bungalow impatiently awaiting low tide to feed on crabs in the nearby tidal pools.” –From (Queensland) “Walking the Gates of Heaven.” “Approaching the park I could almost feel the forest’s coolness surrounding the car. The road narrowed and trees, almost claustrophobic in density, crowded against the edge of the pavement. Yellowish, beam-like shafts of sunlight filtered through the treetops. Eerily, a green silence enveloped the landscape and my rental car. I had entered the Lamington rainforest.” –From (Queensland) “Where the Kookaburra Laughs.” About the author: John W. Perry is a semiretired Hawai‘i-based freelance writer. Perry has written more than 300 magazine articles on a diversity of subjects, from European flower history to Caribbean wildlife, from place-name etymology to Micronesian and Hawaiian history. In previous years, he also wrote for numerous American travel publications and airline in-flight magazines. In addition, he wrote 25 percent of the now-defunct Berlitz Traveller's Guide to Hawaii: "Perry, a longtime resident of the Pacific region, is a contributor to several North American and Asia-Pacific magazines. He lives in Honolulu and has traveled the South Seas on magazine assignments." Guam's now-defunct Islander: "Perry is a mysterious writer who reportedly lives in Honolulu surviving on history and beer." Pacific Travelogue, a special 1988 airline publication of Continental Micronesia (today United Airlines): "A confirmed islomane (one who finds islands irresistible), Perry's pastimes include reading 19th-century travel books and browsing in antique map stores."

It inspired me to read more books and especially all of the London books. I enjoyed the raw animus, the Alaska wilderness, and the struggle to survive. I love adventure, the outdoors, dogs, hunting, fishing, and hiking. Consequently, this book was a perfect start for me.Buck is a beloved character and the book is very well written - so well, that I could suggest it as a writing clinic in itself! Highly recommended. It's all-out corporate warfare when two titans of the energy industry square off over newly struck oil in a southern Somalian province. Boardroom battles rage in the west while, on the ground, two massive armies of hired guns fight to a stalemate that could boil over at any moment.

Tech specialist Ted Reagan and his commando-trained partner, Alex, are hired, under the banner of their new company, Reagan Kirwan International, to turn the tables. Their seemingly simple mission takes a deadly and dangerous turn as they learn they are not the only trump cards in the game and they may be on the wrong side.

Facing the most dangerous of adversaries, constant peril, and treacherous corporate politics, they must stand together if they want to survive - and, of course, collect their pay checks. Because war is a two-player co-op and all they have is each other.

In this sequel to Godwin’s Law, which I previously reviewed, they have to tip the scales when two titans of oil energy collide over the rights of oil in a Somalian province. But when the two of them figure out they might be on the wrong side, and they find themselves in terrible danger, they have to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out of this mission alive, and in time to collect their paychecks. This is another fast-paced thriller by an author whose writing skills I’ve come to admire. Despite dealing with complicated situations and complex plots, it remains an easy to follow read and one that easily pulls the reader in, and entices them to keep reading until the end.I found I liked Ted the most here. He’s more complicated than Alex, and I liked how he always relies on his brains and wits to save the day. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

An adventure of the heart in the mold of literature's classic spiritual journeys.

It began with a girl. Then it was Italian food. After that it was books and discovering that even Mark Twain had fallen for Italy. E. M. Forster was smitten too: :Love and understand the Italians, for the people are more marvelous than the land."

What is it about Italy and Italians?

Italian movies immortalize the mystique. Fellini called it La Dolce Vita. Tornatore's Cinema Paradiso took James Shaw back to the sweet memories of his childhood and the Italian family who operated the hometown theater. And just like in the movie, young James had an Alfredo who, by example, taught him about serving people.

James learned that Italians don't feel they're special. Luigi Barzini, author of The Italians, repeatedly asked, "Why are we the way we are?" and found no conclusive answer.

But James was convinced there was a reason why the Renaissance was born in Tuscany and Italy has given the world Saint Francis, Michelangelo, da Vinci, Galileo, and now Benigni, whose film, Life Is Beautiful, showed the world that the Italian zest for living can even make a heaven of a hell.

And so, after a lifetime of thinking about Italy, James became convinced that the way to find out why Italians are the way they are would be to eat with them at their kitchen tables. Day after day he picked their olives, and the Italians began treating him like family. And James began seeing their unique human quality that attracts people to Italy and keeps pulling them back again and again.

But the story doesn't end in the olive groves of Tuscany. To discover the heart of Italian life, James had to travel back to World War II Italy.

An Italian Journey will inspire you to follow your passions, your enthusiasms, to your own beautiful discoveries.

Bella Scoperta!

A heart-warming voyage By Dianne Hales There is a bit of Italian, I believe, in everyone's soul and many different ways to discovering and enjoying this special spirit. In AN ITALIAN JOURNEY, James Ernest Shaw takes us along on a voyage, not just into Italy's heart, but his own. Shaw sought to connect with Italians by working side-by-side with them in Tuscan olive fields. But he harvested far more than a seasonal crop. Italy's people are indeed even more marvelous that their land, and Shaw's book is a worthy tribute to them.If you're planning a trip to Italy, read this so you don't miss out on the Italy that tours never visit. If you're staying at home, just sit back and enjoy the ride. Preferably with a nice Tuscan wine at your side.

So, there I am in Tuscany, having paid for this book on my Kindle, thinking it would be a wonderful companion on the trip. For the first couple of chapters, it is, although the simplistic writing hovers at the fifth grade level. But I put up with it because, after all, I'm in Italy! He's in Italy! Then I notice the phrases "thanking the Lord" and "thanking god" start to creep into the narrative. I keep reading...after all, the man explains that he survived a terrible accident in his 30s. Who am I to judge him for turning to religion, although I didn't expect that to be the topic of a travel memoir... Plus, he's biking through Tuscany, working on farms...what a great story...right?Unfortunately, Mr. Shaw does not seem to share my predilection for refraining from judging others. Here's where it starts to get funky: "Feel good government aid is hard to be against, but the time may be coming when bureaucrats won't [sic] have to see the errors of their ways - that by paying money for kids born out of wedlock, they are encouraging the bastardization of America, of Italy" (loc 1351). I read on, thinking that perhaps this was a minor preachy moment that would pass. Nope. "I was thinking that giving extra money to single mothers discourages marriages, pure and simple. If we as a society dangle the carrot, should we be surprised that so many women take it?" (loc 1356) I keep reading from pure disbelief that this is in a book about "An Italian Journey". And then, he says to Pietro, "I just read that forty percent of the babies born in the United States are to unwed mothers", (loc 1360) RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE OLDER SINGLE MOTHER WHO IS HIS HOST. Wait...it gets better...he congratulates himself for not going further "because it might have hurt Aurora's feelings..." (LOC 1364) Duh, YA THINK?!?!Needless to say, I've deleted the book. What a disappointment. If I wanted to read about conservative moralistic thinking, I could have paid for something by Ann Coulter.

28 of 31 people found the following review helpful. An Italian Journey By Susan de Siena I've been to Italy twice and, like the author, I've fallen in love with Italy and the Italian people. I enjoyed reading about the author's experiences working in the olive groves and his interaction with the people. I did not enjoy reading about his religious opinions. Evolution vs. Creation - really? Better the author had stayed with harvesting olives and learning Italian.

2087 AD: During a traumatic abduction, twelve year old Heather experiences a phase of psychic development that saves her life. Destined by her abilities, genetic heritage and inclinations, in a few short years, she is an integral part of 'World Unity'. From Atlantis to a newly settled land, Antarctica, the action comes thick and fast in this multidimensional, speculative, futuristic thriller. In a world gone mad, seemingly, hurtling towards its own inevitable doom - I'm not describing some futuristic science fiction nightmare but, from our point of view, the here and now - it seemed we had little choice but to accept our fate; 'God's will' some were saying. There was an existential alternative to man's downwardly spiraling destiny: one in which we needed to take control; however, that meant taking responsibility, complete responsibility; enter 'World Unity'. A little later in this century, after global warming had resulted in radical weather patterns, rising sea levels, changing land masses; where depletion of the ozone layer, a limited nuclear war, and the life force of the Earth itself hitting back had all contributed to the shifting of the Earth's axis. In this world, where the main three, separate ideals of 'the one God' - Islam, Christianity and Judaism - had almost entirely wiped each other out; taking control involved altering or rearranging mankind's basic belief structures about the nature of reality: accepting that we, individually and collectively, create and are responsible for our own reality. This is a world where equality is not just an ideal, or a pipe dream; it is a world where mankind begins to recognize that objective reality is an outcome and the direct result of the way we deal with subjective, inner realities. In this world, reincarnation is not a loosely hinted at, largely laughed at concept, but is an accepted, complex, intricate part of mankind's spiritual development. There is also a serious attempt made to understand the 'Ego', its distortions - particularly in the male of the species - and its real purpose. During this period of the opening of man’s psyche, physical and psychic discoveries leave us in no doubt that we have been around, and in advanced civilizations, for many millions of years. 2087: Seen through the eyes of Heather Skye Wilson, our protagonist, daughter of two of the worlds leading diplomats for 'World Unity', the story begins with her abduction by terrorists when she is twelve years old. The traumatic experience brings Heather into her ‘Control Point’, a phase of psychic development that helps to save her life. Destined by her abilities, genetic heritage and inclinations Heather is drawn more and more into the 'World Unity' cause. With the rebirth of the one God religions, a Messiah is born, and there is a very real danger that the planet will plunge, once more, into religious turmoil. A lot of the action is centered around a newly settled land; a land that, until recent times, had been covered in massive ice fields since before Atlantis' final rise and fall: Antarctica. ‘Trilogy of the One GOD’ is a fast paced multidimensional, speculative, futuristic, action thriller of two survival stories rolled into one: the protagonist Heather's and planet Earth's. Both are inexorably linked; they both survive or nobody does.

Trilogy of the One GOD, by T. D. McKinnon

About the Author Born in Scotland in 1950 and raised in the coalmining communities of Scotland and England, T.D. McKinnon joined the British Parachute Regiment when he was just fifteen years old. After spending five years in the British army he worked at a number of occupations including bus driver, furnace-man, builder's labourer, roofer, bouncer, storeman, car salesman, life guard, aquatics manager, private investigator and for many years he was in high risk security: event and venue security, close personal protection, cash and gem escort and armed, rapid response for a national bank group. Training in the martial arts for most of his life and becoming a master in several forms he represented at national level, both in Scotland and Australia, and became a national referee. As well as teaching and instructing in the private sector, he taught at government and private schools; also in the corporate sector (security industry). T.D. McKinnon has a daughter, Amanda, living in England, sons, Stuart and Steven McKinnon, living in Syney Australia. Whilst at school T.D. McKinnon displayed a natural talent for writing, but it wasn't until the 1980s, after moving to Australia, that he began writing again. Initially writing for his own enjoyment, after having publications in the 'Letters to the Editor' columns of several Sydney newspapers, the inevitable, delayed budding of his writing career began. Following articles published in 'Impact, Blitz and 'Combat', martial arts magazines, and 'The Green Earth', an environmental newspaper, he began submitting short stories to various magazines e.g. 'Cosmopolitan' etc. T.D. McKinnon writes in several genres including action/thriller, speculative fiction, memoir and historical fiction. Thomas is now writing full time and has completed 'Surviving the Battleground of Childhood', 'I Was a Teenage Devil - But I'm Alright Now!', 'John Farrell Is Utrinque Paratus', 'Heather Skye Wilson Is the Psychic Warrior', and 'Terra Nullius'. T.D. presently lives in Tasmania, Australia with his wife Zoë, a professional actor, singer and dancer. Zoë is the editor of T.D.'s works; additionally she designs and creates the book covers.

I’d have to call it New Age Fantasy. Telekinesis and ESP are out. Astral travelling and multiple lives are in. This newness has its advantages and disadvantages; while it may be refreshing, original and creative, it also requires a bit too much explaining. “Heather Skye Wilson is the Psychic Warrior” is no exception. The original premise is sound. In a post-apocalyptic almost-utopia, a girl who represents the latest incarnation of an ancient spirit is both aided and hindered in her duties by the experiences of her past lives. As her young life progresses before us, she develops her abilities and learns about her past lives as well, reliving them as the reader does. Thus Scottish clan warfare, coal-mining poverty and abuse, fundamentalist religious fanaticism and modern weaponry are sprinkled liberally through the story, giving opportunity for a great deal of well-choreographed suspense and heavy action.I found some of the flashbacks to former lives to be as gripping, and the earlier incarnations as empathetic, as the main character in her present-day form. This cumulative effect is what keeps the disjointed timeline from breaking our contact with the character and the story. My complaint, as mentioned above, is the excess of explanation. Those who hate prologues will revel in reviling the introduction, which is basically superfluous, since the same information is mostly slipped into the story later on, in smaller chunks, as it should be.Warning: the theme of sexual abuse is handled delicately, but will make this a story for the over-14 reader.A workmanlike foray into a blossoming new genre. Of special interest to Fantasy and Sci-Fi fans looking for something more creative than the norm.

Surprising By Melissa Bowersock I found the concept of this book intriguing, as it takes a very advanced view of the foibles of human nature and tries to find solutions to the struggles we have dealt with for millennia. I was especially caught up by the invention of the "sting," an implanted capability that suddenly and irrevocably levels the playing field between men and women in a very surprising way.As Heather Skye Wilson evolves in her psychic and diplomatic training and takes on more and more responsibility in this future world of 2087, the story accurately describes the ongoing struggles to create a perfect world full of very imperfect people. Even as the most progressive thinkers work toward the goal of ensuring everyone has access to the safest, most productive potential they can achieve, other predatory forces continue to plumb the deepest, darkest corners of the human soul. The story wrestles with the most profound questions of humanity, and the answers are more complex and more surprising than you might guess.

Interesting take on reality By DV As another reviewer mentioned, the ideas regarding reality put forth in Heather Skye Wilson is the Psychic Warrior are pretty advanced. With a future world as the setting, I enjoyed McKinnon's take on the age-old principles that have been taught by sages throughout history. Although there were sections I had a hard time reading (they deal with sexual abuse)--and I'm sure they must have been hard to write--ultimately, they fit the story and added a deeper layer to the characters. I'm not sure how to classify the book for other readers--I suppose speculative fiction would be the closest, although there are elements of sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal and action/adventure. All in all, a thought-provoking read.
