Flawed but fun, and original By Mike Robbins Well, this is something a bit different!A daemon is a computer program that controls an ongoing background process that a device needs to function. They’re found everywhere and you’re not aware of them because as the user, you don’t interact with them. But they interact with each other. So – what if the daemons in different devices started consciously talking to each other? In George Saoulidis’s zany near-future thriller, Nanodaemons, that’s what they do.The book begins with a number of daemons becoming aware of each other across a Personal Area Network (PAN), a network of a user’s personal devices. The PAN is Leo’s. He’s an Athens construction worker just waking up after having a prosthetic implanted, following a very nasty accident. Bit by bit the daemons in his implants, Walkman and other devices get acquainted (they’ve been reset), and try and figure out what’s going on. And not a moment too soon, because Leo is just about to be framed for murder, and he’s going to need their help.That’s about all the plot I’d want to give away. But let’s just say that it all gets very weird. Along the way there’s a dog with prosthetic legs, a promiscuous tanned lifeguard, an enormous cobra and a vintage Walkman with a sense of occasion. It’s all completely bonkers, and rather exhilarating.The book’s not without its problems. Understanding what the various daemons do is difficult; I am fairly computer-literate so I managed, but would have appreciated a glossary. (There’s one in the back. But most readers will, like me, not realize that until they’ve finished.) Also, Saoulidis’s English is great and its American style is right for the book, but the odd British word or phrase slips in and sounds out of place. More seriously, big parts of the story are never quite resolved, and in the later parts of the book the daemons fade out here and there, weakening the plot.I’ve given the book four stars anyway because it really is very original (and, in places, extremely funny). It’s also quite thought-provoking. Already, if you buy a new stereo, you’ll likely be offered an Android or iPhone app for it so you can use it as a remote. There are also already fridges that can track what’s in them, and it won’t be long before you’ll use them to let you know (say) how much beer you’ve got in, so you can get some on the way home – or even order it for home delivery. Much of what Saoulidis puts in this book is not so far away at all. What happens when we, or our homes, become networks of devices that talk to each other rather than us?This book has its flaws – the holes in the plot and the unresolved storyline, especially; I’d normally knock a star or two off for those. But not in this case. Nanodaemons is original and fun, and I suspect I’ll read more by Saoulidis.(The author kindly supplied an e-book for review purposes.)

It took a while to figure out what was going on, but when I did, I loved the play-style viewpoint of the daemons and the idea that they have human-like emotions and personalities. The sections featuring the viewpoint of the nanodaemons were definitely the high points of the book.The other viewpoints I was not so enamored of. The style switches between omniscient narrator and third person. Still, I grew to like the main protagonist, Leo, and especially Aibo, and even Leo’s love interest. The narration jumps didn’t bother me that much.What bothered me more was frequent odd word usage, awkward in many spots. I eventually decided that the writer is likely not a native English speaker, which is fine, but the work should probably have gone through someone who could pick out those things that sound odd to an American or English ear, if it’s going to be targeted to those groups. The writing is clunky. At first it didn’t bother me much, but started to wear as things went on. Also, it seemed to get worse further on in the book, particularly when the user’s viewpoint is represented.I also had some plot issues: Some deus ex machina; the girl (or her father) has the correct anti-venin for an enhanced cobra? Why was there only one warden/employee in the entire prison and why weren’t any of the doors locked? And the big one: the ‘why’ was never answered at all. Why would a Sikh want to murder the mayor? What did the mayor ever do to them? And why set up Leo to be framed, especially in this convoluted manner? It seemed a very shaky way to do it. And if he was set up to take the fall, why murder him? That would kind of defeat the purpose. It’s like the author is trying to add excitement to a book which is really about the inner workings of nanotechnology. A great idea that was stretched to work. I would have preferred that the whole thing be experienced through the eyes of the daemons.All-in-all, I really enjoyed this novella, but would have enjoyed it more with some of the issues taken care of. I would still recommend it to future-tech aficionados, sci-fi fans, and adventure fans. A really interesting, and unique, viewpoint.

I Love Armd By JD Lovil Author of Worldship Praxis I received a free copy of this book to read and review.This is an entertaining tale from the point of view of the controlling programs for the cybernetic implants of a young man, known to them as User. Each of these programs controls a specific function, so I guess you could call them the device driver programs.The story is about a young man with a new replacement of his amputated arm by an old cyber arm, controlled by a hilariously insane nanodaemon. Most of the cyber dialogue is geek level jokes and puns, and it is funny throughout the story.One neat detail is that when the man lost his arm, a dog, who was sort of a mascot, at the construction site that the man worked at, was hurt in the same accident, and he was also fitted with several cybernetic replacements. In addition, our hero stumbled into a situation, and was framed for murder.It is fun to watch as the nanodaemons struggle to help the man survive, and to overcome the opposition. It was a little challenge to translate the techno geek speak into something resembling a language with which I am familiar, but then, it is the journey, not the destination, that is the prize in this one.Only one thing marred this one for me, mostly because I was never sure if it was deliberate or accidental. Several sentences were repeated in the text, as though there was multiple copy and paste errors. I could see this as an editing error, or as a cyber-world commentary. I was not sure which it was.Regardless, it was funny, and thought provoking, and I highly recommend the book to the more computer oriented of the readership universe. It is worthy of a five star ranking, and the appreciation of Readers everywhere.
