Buchan efectively invented the thriller genre, and this short novel follows the rules, though in a somewhat diffident manner. Our hero is a staid lawyer/politician who stumbles upon a conspiracy that finds-- it seems, anyway-- most of the people of London on his tail, seeking his demise. Buchan is businesslike as always, and this is one of his better efforts.

This book is good for bothadults and young adults. I wish someone had introduced this book to me in 7th or 8th grade along with Prester John, Greenmantle, and The Thirty-nine Steps. These books are the forerunners of Eric Ambler's A Coffin for Demetrios, which I also recommend. These books established the thriller genre which led to the techno-thrillers of Clancy and Ing.
