Tango Fantasia shows what happens to body & soul when unbridled passion meets imagination. The loveliness of tango lures you in. Camille Cusumano, author of Tango, an Argentine Love Story, has gathered three of her other tango works into one tango lover's book, a fantasia of true stories, essays, and fiction. Quantum Tango, a novella, starts like the dance, a smooth "salida," then takes flight in Borges-like magical realism. Tango Goes to Africa is a riveting reportage of her 2014 humanitarian project in Kenya. Eat, Dance, Love is an anthology of tango stories and essays published in various publications over a ten-year period.

By Jack Deveny In her latest offering, “Tango Fantasia”, Ms.Cusumano offers a thrilling compendium of all her tango works set in a sometimes joyful and at other times heartbreaking world stage. Her modern odyssey begins with a woman who has a lucrative (not to mention prestigious) position with a noted periodical, only to throw it all away after falling unconsciously under the spell of Argentine tango and thereafter becoming an unabashed addict.Abandoning her job and on the heels of a failed love affair which ended after many years (and not without a little melodrama and violence) she finds herself in Buenos Aires, the beating heart of tango, knowing no one, unable to speak the native tongue, and uncertain of finances. The passion of her persona, however, will quickly infect the reader and we all know she will not be denied her opportunity to live and flourish in “Tango Heaven”. She gobbles up the language, the culture, the dance scene, and soon acquires many friends. She finds herself a Principal Dancer in the street ballet known as tango.Originally, she planned to stay only a few months. We already know that given her highly fuelled nature that time allotment will certainly be exceeded. Lo and behold, two years later, she’s still there! An aside on her writing. Her style is so fluid and given with such ease that the reader soon becomes convinced that she is only speaking to him or her and that we are fully with her in all her wonderful successes and dramatic downturns.Having become adept at not only dancing tango, she soon becomes a successful teacher, to no ones surprise. Upon returning to the United States she then decides to leave again, this time to fully give her love of tango to the impoverished of Africa. She raises several thousand dollars to go into many of the worst slums of an impoverished nation and spread her joy to some of the most endearing young people I’ve ever had the privilege to meet on the printed page. The kids excel immediately and remarkably to learn tango and of course all fall in love with Camille. And here is where the story turns dark. Her adult African sponsors soon take advantage of her finances, padding many fees and pocketing the difference.Ms.Cusumano’s Sicilian heritage is not fooled by this chicanery and her accompanying ire is soon felt. In spite of it all, she weathers forward, knowing she has brought bliss into the lives of the young downtrodden. The book also contains many articles she has written about Argentine tango in numerous magazines. Her ability to describe the euphoria that one can experience in tango is completely unmatched. Many see the dance as foreplay ritual, but she knows its real secret, a joining of souls that supersedes time, space, and gender, delivering the participant into experience like no other. I can’t wait for the next installment.
