By sarah hardy Jack is back in the sixth book in the Nightingale series.Ideally it would be better to have read other books in the series so you can fully enjoy this book. The main reason is there are a few characters that have been with Jack for some if not all of the series and the background to these characters is something you do not want to miss out on.Stephen Leather has written yet another brilliantly thrilling novel full of demons and devils galore. One person I do miss from the earlier books is Jenny, Jacks assistant and I wish Stephen could find a way to bring her back as, as much as I enjoy these books there has been a sense of something missing. In this book though there is a new strong female role, Perez. Maybe this is a lady that will be making more appearances and will fill the female void that I have missed.Fans of the Nightingale series certainly will not be disappointed with the latest in the series. Jack is his usual superstitious self, he seems to be even more wittier than usual also. I loved how many times the americans mistook him for being an australian and you could feel his patience running out. New York Night is certainly a dark and chilling read that seems to have more blood and gore than usual and it certainly made for a chilling read that does not disappoint. As soon as I pick up one of this authors books I know I am in for a fast paced read that will have me hooked from beginning to end. The Jack Nightingale series is great for fans who like crime books mixed with the super natural.

Great 7th in a series pits Jack against some downtown demons By James Tepper NEW YORK NIGHT is the seventh Jack Nightingale novel by author Stephen Leather, and the second (novel - there are a couple of short stories as well) to take place in the US rather than the UK. For information on how and why Jack came to leave his entire life and (almost) all his friends in the UK with all of them thinking that he is dead, see LASTNIGHT, the 5th novel in the series.Jack is now a sort of gopher for the fantastically wealthy, multi-billionaire Joshua Wainwright, who is himself a magical adept. Wainwright has had cameos in most of the latter JN stories, and he is an ambiguous figure. He pays Jack to help him root out various and sundry demonic and other tenebrous happenings, and was a key figure in saving Jack's life back in LASTNIGHT, but the reader keeps getting mixed messages about him such that we (and Jack) are never 100% certain which side he is on and what he really wants. This time, Jack is sent to NYC to find out about some gruesome murders involving lots of cutting of the victims, that appear to be intended to obfuscate a different demonic sigil carved into each victim. There circumstances and locations of the murders are also strange, and very similar to a recent murder in Philly. Wainwright arranges an entré to the scene for Jack by sending him to Cheryl Perez, and ex-NYPD homicide cop who, like Jack, is now a PI. Cheryl is a devout Catholic and as things start to get really creepy, and Jack starts to get a handle on what is going on, he has to try to balance his attempts at a fix while still shielding Cheryl from a truth about what is really out there that she just cannot accept. Now is the time for all the usual kudos to Leather for writing, pacing, plotting etc. They're all great. And while I still miss Jenny, Robbie, bacon sandwiches (Leather must know that we have bacon in the US) and the MG, NEW YORK NIGHT is, I think, a much better novel than its predecessor, SAN FRANCISCO NIGHT. Jack is acting more like the old Jack, there is ton of magical mayhem, as well as a mystery as to who or what is really behind everything, and Cheryl is an interesting female foil or maybe more for Jack. If I have any quibbles, its that Stephen Leather is so canalized with Britspeak that in a few places, he has Americans saying things that no American would say. Stephen, mate, if the next novel is set in the US have one of your American friends give it a read to de-British the American dialog.Highly recommended.JM Tepper

Baroness' Book Trove's Review of New York Night By Amazon Customer Wow this is the first book I read of the Jack Nightingale series and I must say that I was impressed by how well written New York Night by Stephen Leather. Once I got my hands on the eBook I was instantly hooked on it. Granted it took me a little bit longer than excepted to read this book but I didn’t mind it was a really good book.I am giving this book five butterflies for a rating because it sucked me in and it was just an excellent read. I know, I know if it was such a good read why didn’t I finish it sooner is probably the question most of you are probably thinking. The reason for that is because sometimes real life takes over you for a little bit and that is what had indeed happened to me.Jack Nightingale is a British supernatural private investigator that has a friend in the United States that wanted him to handle two cases in New York that had to do with the supernatural business well mostly Hell but yeah same thing. The reason this certain person contacted Jack about these two cases is because he couldn’t think of anyone he trusted better than Jack to keep an eye on the two cases and figure out with what is going on in New York and another state. The evil agents from Hell kept jack on his toes. They twisted him all around New York staying a few steps ahead of him. Lilith was by far my favorite bad. As she kept a low profile, stayed in the shadows and kept the other bad guys in line. She has quite a mouth on her, and I like her snarky attitude.I don’t want to spoil it for the people that haven’t read it since that is something that I don’t like anyone doing no matter who that person is. All I am going to say though is that this is an awesome read. However the previous six books sound just as amazing as this one. If anyone were to ask me about a good supernatural detective book I will most certainly tell them to read a Jack Nightingale book. So, grab that hot chocolate, blanket and this Jack Nightingale mystery and you won't have to go out in the snow.Anyways until the next time enjoy this book review brought to you byBaroness’ Book Trove.PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PUBLISHER ASKED ME TO READ AND GIVE AN HONEST REVIEW FOR THIS BOOK!To read more of my reviews like this one please visit my blog: baronessbooktrove.com
