Commander David Shannon is an electronics whiz aboard a black-ops submarine that has just finished testing under south Puget Sound. I had to grit my teeth to continue reading during the first chapter. Things began to open up [and I could unclinch] as soon as chapter two opened. So, my advice to new readers is to do your best to hang on should you, too, find that your eyes are glazing over in chapter one. As another reviewer states, you can skip past a lot and not miss anything.Having been a long time reader of George's blog, the subject matter of this book was not a surprise although the twists and turns in the second half certainly were. While some amazing ideas were presented near the end of the book, the reader is left hanging as to whether and in what way the DNA info, for example, applied to the characters in this story. Since the research on that aspect was just beginning as the book ended, I assume he's setting up for a sequel. If so, an additional comment regarding the main character -- while the book's subtitle seems to place David Shannon as lead action hero, it is really another one, who ought to take center stage. He was the actual dreamer of the dreams, seemed to have a better grasp and understanding of the "dream transfer information," and had more depth of character than the supposed hero, who appeared rather two dimensional at times.I would love to see George allow an editor to read this book and give him professional advice. There is a huge difference between writing blogs or news stories and writing fiction. He is an expert in the first two and a newbie on the last. There are too many grammatical errors -- especially what I call misplaced dependent modifying clauses. [Hint: the word "who" does not describe and action or a thing.] Therefore, combined with the Clancey-esque writing in Chapter one, I've reluctantly deducted one star.Despite those issues mentioned, I would still recommend this book to anyone willing to entertain some VERY unique ideas in the field of dreaming and the nature of human consciousness. This is cutting edge stuff, y'all.

Outlier Experiences By Dogwalker A very good first-effort novel by my favorite blogger (urbansurvival.com).I'll get my major complaint out of the way. The level of technical detail impedes the read. Perhaps these could be put in sidebars in future books. The tech-speak convinces of depth-of knowledge, yet tires the eye-ear. All this would disappear into the background in a movie--and DreamOver would make a fine one.The world is far stranger than we want to deal with on a day-to-day level. We want--indeed--we NEED--clear cause and effect relationships for our society's underpinnings to 'work'. We constantly ignore/underreport/pick ourselves up and stumble on -- when weird 'outlier' experiences smack us in the face. We can't afford to go there and stay employed.George Ure, however, is self-employed, and his blog readers have come to expect of him that he 'lift the veil' on all matter of arcane subjects -- mainly money, and how to make and protect it. And, he also frequently does his best to take a no-snark look at what might be the REAL underpinnings of our world. DreamOver falls into this category. George himself has lucid and precognitive dreams. These fascinate him to no end. He started the National Dream Center (nationaldreamcenter.com) and later turned it over to another person to run.So -- DreamOver derives from the kernel of George's own 'outlier experiences'.I have rarely had the kind of dream experiences which George reports. However, I am familiar with an amazing creative learning/problem solving technique called "Borrowed Genius" (also known as Putting-on-Heads) which you can find on Amazon, by Win Wenger.Enjoy your journey into outlier experiences with both George and Win. No. Drugs. Needed.

The series has potential but it will hinge on the author being willing to submit his work to a professional editor prior to publishing. Those familiar with his near daily columns and musing will appreciate the improvements reviewed writing has on the errors in his works; those expecting a tightly edited book will be disappointed. At times the dialog is more to show the writers' depth of knowledge and not the brilliance of the characters. When you get to one of those long slogs (and you will, trust me), replace the tedious paragraphs with the phrase "and for the next twenty minutes, I remained awestruck as (insert name) in minute detail listed every possible (thing) needed to (build, buy, fly, row, swim or sail) the (whatever is being discussed)". You'll shave over an hour off the read time and be none the worse for the result. Good concept with potential for a series. Enjoy the problems and situations the author presents and imagine what it can become.
