Ward By the time your book has been through this many editions, it is nearly as classic as the hikes it describes. And indeed, there is a reason Warren's book has stood the test of time; it manages to capture the spectacular diversity of Arizona, from the highest of the San Francisco Peaks to the hottest desert terrain. The book also features sharp topographical maps and beautiful photos. In short, it looks the part of a five star hiking guide.But I'm only giving it 4 stars. The reason is that there is precious little diversity when it comes to the difficulty of these hikes. Quite apart from the unforgiving climate(s) in the state, many of the trails, even the relatively short ones, are quite steep. A three mile round trip hike that gains 1500 feet is never easy, and most of the hikes in this book fall into this category. They are challenging either because they are long, up to 38 miles (one way!) or short but definitely highly aerobic. It would be nice to see a few more gentle trails for the physically disabled. Yes Warren includes a nice 1 mile walk at Sunset Crater National Monument, but this is the exception, not the rule, in a book where the average hike is 8.55 miles and often includes significant elevation gain and loss. So, the bottom line with this book is that it offers 100 classic hikes, and you had best be in near peak condition for most of them.

By Rae Phillips This was a really enjoyable read, the author Susan Rogers is clearly an experienced traveler and shares her experience of The Gambia in this travelogue. The tone of her narrative is warm and engaging, so much so that you feel you get to know Rogers really well! The author has a very dry and funny sense of humour and her quirky personality will keep you reading on.I loved the matter of fact way in which she retells her adventures, especially the names she comes up with for the characters she meets; Velcro Man and Mr Arrogant stand out for me! The author has a knack of picking out fine details and reading between the lines when people watching that makes the reader feel you are standing right alongside her! Not many of us like to admit we are voyeurs but I found something satisfying in her silent analysis of some of the characters she stumbled across.Rogers describes the geography and culture of Gambia beautifully, this is not the first time she has visited and her knowledge and experience is evident.Overall, the best part about her writing for me was the people watching and whether you are a seasoned traveller looking for inspiration, or an armchair traveler looking to satisfy your wanderlust you will enjoy this read.

As the hour moves on, the pictures zoom in, until a single bird is pictured at 11:00. Starting at 11:00, the bird is shown on one page, and a girl on the facing page. The girl is clearly getting ready to attempt a flight of her own, dressed in a white flight suit, adjusting her goggles, wings strapped to her back. As the time moves close to 12:00, the bird appears fatigued and his feathers start to fall out. By noon, he has transformed into a boy. He gently alights on one end of a seesaw; the girl waits on the other end. As soon as he lands, she is off. The final page shows her metamorphosis into a bird, and the last picture is the same flock that appeared in the first one. Ages 8 and up.Pros: A wordless picture book full of wonder. Who are the children? Why do they turn into birds? What do the times signify? Children will have to call on their imaginations to guess what is happening in the pictures.Cons: No easy answers.

It begins with a bird flying through a dark sky, while a young person in white is getting ready… for what exactly? Nothing about the narrative is handed to you, but you’re pulled along as the bird makes progress and the young person is clearly waiting for something. I don’t know whether to classify this as fantasy or science fiction. Or maybe it’s unclassifiable.The back cover says “Let Your Imagination Fly.” If engaging the imagination was Vidal’s goal, she’s succeeded. The art is delicate, sophisticated, and clearly done with great care. (Some of it is watercolor, and some colored pencil, I think?) Absolutely worth reading with a child, or on your own.

Not typical Verne By CKE Jules Verne is known as the father of science fiction, however this is one of the few novels that falls outside of that genre. Other non-science fiction works by Verne are sometimes lack-luster (specifically "Measuring the Meridian") , but that is not the case for "800 Leagues on the Amazon". While "800 Leagues" is a departure from Verne comfort zone he still delivers a novel that is full of intrigue and suspense. The first 100 pages of "800 Leagues" reads very slow and is somewhat tedious, but the story does build suspense to and finishes strong. Verne is in his full glory has he paints the wildlife, fauna, and landscape of the Amazon region. Ulimately the story is one of family, honor, and loyalty despite the circumstances of life. Verne has always made "honor" a strong theme in his works and "800 Leagues" may be his finest exmple. My final verdict - while this is not Verne's best work (my favorite will always be "The Mysterious Island") it is still in the top half of what I read of Verne. I would compare to "5 Weeks in a Balloon" with "800 Leagues" being slightly inferior. However, "800 Leagues" is still a must read for Verne fans.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. EIGHT HUNDRED LEAGUES ON THE AMAZON By WIN RAYBURN Not what you would expect from Jules Verne. Modern readers would possibly prefer it being about half as long since he spent a great deal of time on the flora and fauna and the villages of the area. Having spent some time in the Amazon, I found this a plus. A story about an honorable man sentenced to death for a crime his didn't commit. An encrypted message which could save his life. Dedicated and loving family and friends in a giant raft going down the Amazon river. A dastardly villian, everything is black and white, no gray areas. A cliffhanger ending which keeps you from putting it down. I have read a lot of Verne's books but had never heard of this until I found it on Kindle. It goes down as my favorite Verne novel.

While some of these rhymes are very familiar most of them were new to me. Frankly, the reason you'll love this book is because of the wonderful illustrations by Rosemary Wells....they are definitely worth the "price of admission". So enjoy the pictures (most are full page) and share the rhymes with your child or grandchild. The sturdy, washable board book format is certainly a plus too and the pages will be easy for your toddler to handle.

It continues without the fierce benign presence of Kazul, King of the Dragons, for at least 90 percent of the book. The no-nonsense sisterhood of the Princess Cimorene and her unwilling captor, Kazul, was one of the delights of Dealing with Dragons (HBJ, 1990). In compensation, however, readers are introduced to Mendanbar, King of the Enchanted Forest. Very much still a callow youth, he imposes his preference for the simple, active life on his new role as king, disappointing his steward, the elf Willin, who has anticipated a resumption of pomp and formality. The discovery of a patch in the Enchanted Forest laid waste by wizards starts him on a quest that soon leads him to Cimorene. The two join forces to find the missing Kazul, and begin a series of misadventures that include riding a defective magic carpet decorated with pink bears, melting several wizards with Cimorene's infallible formula of soapy water and lemon juice, and advising a giant who is bored with pillaging to go into the consulting business. From Kirkus Reviews Sensible princess Cimorene meets sensible king Mendanbar of the Enchanted Forest, and they sensibly decide to get married-- but not before each mistakes the other for those greatest of twits, the pompous hero and the simpering princess; they take a bumpy ride on a broken-down magic carpet to rescue Kazul, King of the Dragons; they meet Telemain, a research magician who never uses one word when ten will do; and they defeat the dastardly wizards attempting to suck all the magic from the Enchanted Forest. Then, to the joy of castle steward Willin (a pomp-loving elf), they exchange vows (almost certainly not including ``to obey''). This sequel to revisionist-fabulist Wrede's Dealing with Dragons (1990) is as sprightly as the original. Nothing much happens, but the wry twists are both fun and funny (e.g., Rumpelstiltskin's grandson appears as a beleaguered but sweet nanny to the many children he ends up with when the beneficiaries of his gold-spinning can't guess his name). It's fantasy, it's comedy, it's . . . delightful By Daniel Jolley Kazul, King of the Dragons is missing, and sections of the Enchanted Forest have been stripped of their magic and turned into dust. This can only be the work of those dastardly wizards. In Searching for Dragons, we unite again with the delightful Cimorene, princess--make that Chief Cook and Librarian--for Kazul, the newly selected King of the Dragons as she seeks once again to thwart the plans of the Society of Wizards to steal untold amounts of magic from the land, this time by attempting to start a distracting war between the realm of dragons and the kingdom of the bordering Enchanted Forest. Mendanbar, the young king of the Enchanted Forest, having discovered sections of his forest destroyed, heeds the council of a wise squirrel to seek the counsel of Morwen the witch. She insists that he meet with the King of the Dragons, before which meeting he encounters the head wizard Zemenar, who implicates the dragons in the destruction he has discovered. Boldly going to the Mountains of Morning, he encounters Cimorene, learns that Kazul is missing, and finds himself joining Cimorene in a search for the missing dragon. Along the way, they encounter a pair of giants, survive a wild ride on a faulty magic carpet, repulse an attack by a horde of snakes, meet up with a strange, loquacious magician, and finally unite along with Morwen to take on the wizards and rescue Kazul. This time, they need more than buckets of soapy water and lemon juice to defeat Zemenar's crew.Wrede is a wonderful writer. She is especially good at closing every hole in the story--things mentioned even briefly early on are brought into play before the end, and the fact that I as a reader actually forgot about many of them along the way just makes me respect her talents even more. Her incorporation of fairy tale lore is brilliantly subtle, and her description of the magic practiced by Mendanbar, which is essentially a visual magic, is quite unusual and interesting. I think that young and old alike can find great enjoyment in this book--I myself believe that it is very important to retain at least a measure of the wonder and magic we knew as children, and fantasy such as this helps much in this regard. Do yourself a favor and read Dealing With Dragons first; you won't appreciate Cimorene nearly as much without knowledge of the first book. While you're at it, go ahead and get Calling on Dragons and Talking to Dragons, as well--if you read one, you will want to read them all.

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. The Entire Series Is (Still) Phenomenally Brilliant By Sunil Patel What? Only five stars? I need more to do this series justice! Patricia C. Wrede writes marvelous fantasy. It's like "Mixed-Up Fairy Tales" or something, but funnier, more engaging, and ripe for repeat reading (After graduating from high school, I read the entire series for the third time in a matter of days). These are timeless tales. Even her NAMES are inventive. Cimorene, Mendanbar, Kazul, Morwen, Telemain, Daystar, Shiara...and let us not forget Zemenar and Antorell. The chapter headings induce chuckles immediately, simply by their existence. She writes in a style that incorporates intelligent fantasy with enjoyable humor. The characters are some you would like to know personally. And nowhere else have I seen as unique a discussion of magic in its many forms as in these four books. I did notice a trend of centralization. Dealing was Cimorene's book. Searching was Mendanbar's. Calling was Morwen's. Talking was Daystar's. I wish the series was not concluded, because I'd love to see Telemain's book. And perhaps Kazul's book could be somewhat of a prequel. Oh, and what about a book from Antorell's perspective? That would make for an incredibly funny story. The Enchanted Forest and its surrounding is a world I want to know about. Not many authors can create an entire world that entices the reader so greatly. But Mrs. Wrede has. Unlike the Douglas Adams' Hitchiker's Guide series, which got progressively worse, each book in the Enchanted Forest Chronicles compares to the original, as fresh and brilliant as ever. Needless to say, this series is one of the best ever. I have not really sampled a lot of the adult fantasy by Piers Anthony and Anne McCaffrey and such, but I doubt they can compare with the Enchanted Forest Chronicles. This is not mindboggling fantasy like the Lord of the Rings trilogy: this is fun. Oh, and remember: ..."Argelfraster."

Brilliant- like the others By medelliana I am a picky reader, especially when it comes to the standard fantasy cliches, like, romance, Dragons, and enchanted forests. This book is easily taken for granted-- a standard quest, with all the usual quest-hampering pitfalls. So how does Patricia Wrede turn it on its head and make this (and the other Enchanted Forest novels) some of the most well-written and engaging novels I've ever read? They appeal to everyone I've ever known who has read them, from my little sister to my much-older cousin. They even appeal to me, reading for the fifth or sixth time many years after I first picked them up. Particularly this one, which may be my favorite of the lot. Anyone who is interested in fairy tales, fantasy- and for that matter, anyone interested in reality- will have their socks knocked off their feet.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A nice adventure story… By Kipper Snack This book was well conceived with an engaging premise. I did not read the first book in this series, The Last Crypt, and started with this one because I’m a sucker for an Amazonian adventure. It’s full of implausible scenarios, a touch of Indiana Jones and a measure of Atlantis, all exquisitely detailed. Let’s remember, this is fiction and it was entertaining. The characters are relatable and stoutly defined. All indications were that it could be read as a standalone so I’m sure I didn’t miss out on anything by not starting with book one (once I read The Last Crypt, I may know differently). I’m sure the Spanish version is quite good but in my view something was probably lost in the translation to English (e.g., “my wrists were bound with plastic strips”, instead of simply stating “zip ties”). For me, that caused the flow of the book to be stilted and suffered because of that (and hence the 4 star rating). That having been said, it was a difficult book to put down because it easily grabbed my attention and each chapter ended with a mini “cliff hanger” prompting me to continue reading.

I would highly recommend the reading of this book and others by author. I can't wait for next adventure of Ulysses Vidal and friends. Hope to read soon.

It's fun and fast and the main characters are like old friends, especially if you've read the first book which I heartily recommend. The subject matter has obviously been well researched and the author presents it in an easily understandable manner. It's a mystery, a suspense novel, a love story and would make a great movie! Ancient ruins lost for millennia in an Amazonian jungle, crawling things, lost tribes of equatorial indians, a search for a missing daughter, and a lot of musty, scary old tunnels. I can't put in much detail without giving away too much of the plot - and I wouldn't want to spoil it for you! A four word description - hard to put down!

Letters from Kansas is beautifully written. Creative historical fiction brings history alive. The author’s voice is strong, consequently, readers can relate to the characters and their experiences. The dialogue rings true for those living during that period of time. Their joy and their pain can be felt, the mark of a good writer. I look forward to book three in the series.

By Groat For that once in a lifetime trip to Europe, you need a fun guide to Venice that you can read in advance, and which will be good for just a couple of days, or longer if you're that lucky. This is an INTENSELY SERIOUS GUIDE to Venice, with plenty of information on the paintings (non-students might want to skip that), and written with MUCH CHEERFUL IRREVERENCE and HUMOR. There are many USEFUL PRACTICAL TIPS on how to manage your holiday in Venice and not be ripped off by the locals. It's a bit different from the Dennis Fish norm, but the authors still like to have a laugh with you.The book is laid out with an initial day of arrival and then TWO FULL DAYS for the person with only limited time. There then follows three more full days for people with FIVE DAYS in Venice, and a sixth full day and lengthy part-day for those there A WHOLE WEEK. That layout isn't made terribly clear, but I'm doing the authors a favor by telling you all now.The extreme irreverence and the colloquialisms of the book can be misleading, especially at first. As the book progresses, the sheer virtuoso knowledge of the authors becomes more and more apparent. When we get to the Accademia, they become decidedly academic, and those who are not particularly interested in paintings will have to wait outside. No, only kidding. There's plenty more places in Venice where you folks can go, and you will seldom find so many bars anywhere. Or you can wander off into deserted areas like around the Campo Angelo Raffaele, or explore the Giudecca, or play truant completely on the Lido. On foot (and there ain't no automobiles) Venice is quite big, with lots of opportunities. Water buses are cheap, you don't need to pay for gondolas. But the Dennis Fish authors know it very well indeed, and you could just leave your itinerary completely to them.I'm really scraping the bottom of the barrel to find anything to criticize. No matter who you are, this is a book which you will want to read before you go, and to take with you on the vacation of your dreams.If you have been to Venice already, like I have, it will remind you of your memories, and you will look up some of those old photos, like I have below.

Not unlike a double Jim Bean, a Snow Leopard or Dirk Kuyt, Hazell has versatility, and then some. Christmas is rapidly approaching us, and the perfect remedy for those cold winter nights is a hearty dose of Dennis Fish.

Hazell does it again with an unorthodox and hilarious view of Venice, which will leave you in fits. Definitely the best one yet, however , highly recommend reading the prequels if you have not already. A MUST READ!
